    Just a quick update.
I originally submitted a service request on Savage Arms' website but I didn't hear anything back.
After waiting a couple weeks, i decided to call them.
Once I talked to a customer service person, it was determined that yes the scope is faulty.
Even tho the scope was not made by them, they sent me a new scope with a pre-paid shipping label for me to send the defective scope back.

Hats off to Savage's customer service, I was expecting at least a small amount of run around before offering to replace the scope since it was not made by them, but Nope. Right away without me even asking they asked for my address and said a new scope is on the way...

Cant wait to get back to the range to try it out.

I had a similar issue with a Savage Axis II in .223. At first I couldn't hit paper, then I noticed the screws on the base were not completely tightened.
After they were tightened down it was easy to sight in.

If you are saying you cranked on the turrets and the POI did not change, then there is a issue with the scope. If the mounts were loose, then the POI would be all over the place. You stated the POI stayed about the same.

That's exactly what happened, the POI did not change. Scope has been replaced as mentioned in my update, just waiting to hit the range.

Savage warranty was awesome for me as well. They paid shipping both ways for my Axis and replaced the bolt head (broken ejector). Very fast turnaround.

                  End of problem for life.
Not necessarily true. I bought a new Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 scope and mounted it on a Savage 93R17 BTV in .17 HMR. At the range the the picture through the scope was so out of focus at all ranges that it was unusable, even producing double images. It is currently at Leupold for repair. In the past I have had similar problems with Leupold scopes that simply wore out and being outdated were replaced at cost by Leupold. Generally, Leupold is a reliable rock solid scope, but every manufacturer has faulty product escape into the wild, they're only human after all. I have had similar problems with the Nikon Monarch's, just look through the catalogs on websites and see how many refurbished Nikon scopes are available. The Weaver scope mentioned was defective, as was confirmed by the OP's follow-on post where Savage replaced it under warranty. Also Savage doesn't seem to torque included scope bases down. Always remove them, clean the preservative oil off and reattach them torquing the base screws to 20 in lbs.

My scope was fine, but the rails were not right. the vertical sides were too tall not allowing the scope rings to grip the rail.

Good to know! I pick up a .308 XP today and I will pay attention to this.
