    Remington 700 Varmint

    Hello all,

I am saving up to make modifications to my Remington 700 .308 with the varmint/Bull barrel.

I want to start with a stock change out. Would like to go with a box magazine. And stiffer stock.

I don't have a good deal of money so it needs to be less than 300.00........

Thank you for your help in advance.

$300 is going to be tough....either try to find one used on the forums (try accurateshooter.com and this forum of course), or try stocky stocks.

if this is going to be your fist modification, consider changing the trigger to a jewell or timney.

You can do what I did....

          Boyds Stock $110
Drop bottom door magazine extention. Sure I can't drop a mag, but I can hold 7 rounds now. $25

Then save the left over to put towards a PTG bottom metal and ACIS mag.

In the meantime, remove the whiffle bat stock and sand it down so the barrel is free floating. It'll still be a whiffle bat, but that costs nothing.

Here is a suggestion. It will cost $340 plus shipping, plus you'll need some JB Weld to glue in the pillars. You can bolt it together yourself. Functional detachable box magazine and bottom metal, functional laminated stock, AICS ten-round magazine.

It will be one to one-and-a-half pound heavier than the higher end alternatives.

Do you really need the detachable box magazine? That feature really complicates your purchase. Unless you are competing you might consider putting that idea on the back burner and just getting a good Bell & Carlson stock with an aluminum bedding block.

Not sure why, but I was laughing for 5 minutes after reading that.

For a Bell & Carlson stock - try Midway or Stockys Stocks, I believe they're about $225.00 in black, there are a few different models available. Their "long range" version has a slightly raised cheekpiece that helps get a good cheek weld. Getting a deal on a used HS stock is viable too. The only detach bottom metal that will drop in is made by "Kwik Klip". Never used it, costs about $90.00 including a magazine. I'm going to guess it's on the "economy" side, Cabelas usually has them.

Pacific Tool & Gauge sells AI compatible detach bottom metal for a good price, but the stock has to be modified to accept it. Having done it myself (by hand ) I think $75.00 is a bargain. I'd have paid that much to get it done - and it wasn't even my rifle.

To piggyback on Post #8 - Pacific Tool & Gauge website sometimes beats Midway pricing, their bottom metal can go anywhere from $75.00 to $99.00 on sale. I have a Ruger GSR and with a bit of fiddling (removing the "ribs") the poly Ruger magazines will work. Whether it's worth it to save about $25.00 per mag is a separate issue.

                      I played with one.
                      They are pretty crappy.

The R700 SPS Varmint's internal mag is a tragedy, maybe bigger than their XMP trigger? I cannot imagine using this after using nothing by real magazines. OP has $300, should save up a bit more and get it done right. If the goal is to spend the least amount of money for a compromise, then the better route is to go Savage with a detachable mag and Accu-trigger.

I bought a hs precision stock here for 160$ shipped. I recently purchased a wyatt drop magazine kit and there was no modification needed. I just took out the internal magazine box and the kit fit like a glove using the same action screws.

The internal box magazine on my remington 700 was a POS. I was only able to load 2 rounds to function properly. Anymore the round would get stuck.

Don't know why you need a detachable mag, but my suggestion is to upgrade the stock now and add a dbm as funds allow in the future. A better stock will yield better returns.
