What about them? I have a T/C Encore and used to shoot a Ruger #1 .300 Win. Mag.

Those are just repeaters that someone forgot to cut a magazine well into...

Picked up a Ruger #1 last year that I didn't "need." Just always thought they were neat, and came across one at the right price.

After I spent a little time with it, though... it's not the useless range toy I expected at all. Having a simple action and no magazine means it's considerably lighter and shorter than you'd think, especially given the caliber (.45-70) and barrel length (22"). As a result it points like my own finger. Very nice to carry, very easy to get on target. I had no idea.

Sure, that follow-up shot will be a little slower, but often it makes no difference. Sometimes simple is good.

Modern bolt action single shot riles are said to be more accurate because the action is more rigid, having no cut-out for the mag. Bench rest rifles are all single shots.
My experience has been mostly with the made in Montana "Cooper" rifles...they have all been very accurate and quite handsome.

Like the Ruger No1 - have 4 of them and looking for a 5th. 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 458 Win Mag. Looking for a .223 to finish the set. Look at the earlier guns with the red buttpads they have better wood. Use caution on ones made in the mid 70s as they had some problems with wood that they dried with salt and this rusts the action.

I have a TC Pro Hunter in 460S&W...one of these days I need to take it out to the range and shoot it!

( But it's real nice to dry fire. )

Modern, I understand they are lighter, more compact but are they as accurate as Mountain Rifles?

Love the looks of the Ruger 1, love my Pedersoli Sharps but she's weighs out like a crew served weapon.

I don't understand why they cost so much money either given what they are.

A single shot can be made to shoot as good as any bolt action repeater. My T/C will shoot ragged one hole groups, it is a 45-70 Gov. the barrel is a Bergara barrel which in my opinion are heads and shoulders above the T/C barrels. HTH
