    Another Remington question...

I'm planning on setting up a .308 700 series rifle like the Marine Corps M40A3/A5... what base platform would you guys start with?

Any short action 700 with a 308 bolt face will do. Some like to try and find the correct serial number range to make them more authentic. Check over on Snipers Hide, there's usually a lot of information there.

You don't have to buy an entire rifle to build on. Your dealer can order you a new Remington 700 action from Brownells:

These are new production and can be barreled any way you want, with any bottom metal, detachable box magazine, trigger, accuracy modifications, stock or what have you. It's an alternative to buying a rifle and dismantling it for the action.

Cheaper to buy a whole 700 ADL/BDL then take it down and rebuild it. The receivers are all the same with respect to action length.

If you plan on tearing the barrel off and getting it done from the ground up, I don't think it really matters one way or another. Buy a bare action, cheapest ADL rifle with a 308 bolt face, or a trued action from someone like C&H.

You may want talk to your gunsmith and see if they even want the action trued before receiving it... I would suspect most would want to do it themselves and not receive someone else's work. Really just depends on what route you want to take.

I think things pretty much stay the same on the Remington side until you start looking at things like the 5R rifle... but I wouldn't buy one of those with the intention to tear it apart right off the bat, but I do like their stainless action.

This is the deal on a trued 700 receiver package:

Just add a stock and a barrel and the gun is complete.

If you really want an M40 it needs to be a long action.

They are all getting converted to 300 win mag anyways.

Dont you mean that the USA has m24 rifles that are built on Remington long actions, and that the USMC has the m40 built on the short action?

I don't need to call anybody to know that you can't chamber a .300 into the short action.

                              Sharp one aren't you ?

And so....that means exactly what to a Marine 2112 with a very sophisticated machine shop ?

All M40s are going to be 300 win mag....all M24s are going to be 300 win mag....all M21s are going to be scrapped.
