Mossberg MVP - which to choose?

I currently shoot a 17hmr bolt action and was looking for a rifle with more bite for the range, a front sight 4 day rifle course and possibly hunting. I'm after something with a magazine so looked at: Ruger GSR (more expensive, proprietary mags), Remington 700 with mag mod (expense would not amuse the wife) and the MVP

The Mossberg MVP in 308 looks like the best option for my budget and I can't decide between the Flex and Patrol.

I'm leaning towards the flex for the following reasons:
    • Compact - can remove the rear stock for packing into my long distance trip vehicle
    • 18.5 inch semi bull barrel - slightly more range then the Patrol?
    • Included scope - on offer at Gallery of guns so almost no price difference to unscoped
    • Possibility to mix stuff up with the flex system (low priority)
    • In stock right now

    The patrol:

caught my eye however with a few pluses of its own:
    • Great sights (not fitted on Flex)
    • Less tacticool than the Flex
    • More compact 16.25 barrel
    • Threaded barrel (not sure if it will come in useful for flash hider or muzzle break at front sight)

Any advice on the subject? The offer on the flex ends tomorrow and it may go out of stock. Should I pull the trigger on it or snag a 700 on black Friday and mod it over a few months.

Thanks for the help from a forum newbie.

patrol patrol patrol patrol. if you want an AR, get an AR. The flex is giving you some crap sight instead of iron sights and charging an extra 400? no thanks. pistol grips on bolt actions are for the bench only IMO.

I guess itcomes down to what you want.

Pros for the flex is the flex system, which it shares with their shotgun line. It can accept the ar style or a traditional stock. Scope is the UTG Bug Buster (http://www.amazon.com/UTG-3-9x32-Com...+buster+3-9x32).

The Patrol has a painted wood stock, iron sights, is very well balanced, and will take any scope that you want to put on it, although you may need to remove the rear blade to fit a longer one. Another plus (to me at least) is that you can put any muzzle device that you want on it. IMHO, this one is easier to mod to exactly what you want.

If I was buying one, I'd get the patrol. There's just something about a traditional short barreled rifle with iron sights. BTW, I have a MVP 5.56mm Predator, and really enjoy it.

There is a dedicated MVP forum over at http://www.mossbergmvp.com. You might want to check them out.

Patrol gets my vote. Like said above, if you want AR stuff, get an AR. The Patol really fits the criteria of a "scout rifle" concept, and as an added bonus versus other rifles in this category, it does not use a proprietary magazine so feel free to use USGI mags if you legally have them.

I'd go for the Patrol. It looks better and fits the scout concept well. The Flex looks hideous - I just can't get past that. If you want a true long range shooter, both barrels are too short. So you get very little for the extra barrel length of the Flex - other than being more unwieldy.

Thanks, looks like the consensus is with the patrol. Will try to put in an order today.

Flex is highly over rated and a pistol grip on a gun like that is dumb. I love the sights on the Patrol and will buy one without a scope so I can attachy own scope with quick detach mounts. 308 generally has a smoother action.

I might be the only one but I vote for the r700. I think turners has them on sale around 400-450 plus a 40$ rebate from remington. Plus you can find cheap accessories here on the fs section. Bad thing is that if you want a mag conversion it will run you $100-300$.

Many left hand shooters like a pistol grips on bolt actions with right hand bolt.
