First long-range bolt-action decision $1000

Here's my breakdown. As you can see, $1000 is super tight. You'll need a few hundred more just to get shooting. Your saying $1,000, but if you spend all that on gun/glass how you going to afford to feed it? Shooting long range means not running to Wal-Mart and buying the cheapest ammo you can. You'll want match grade ammo or handloads.

I know it's tight. That's why i'm shaving where I can. I don't want to have to upgrade stock right away. That's why I'm probably leaning away from the Remington. The Primary Arms scope seems like a legit starting point. Maybe down the line I'll want to upgrade that, and I can throw that scope on another rifle.

I'm already setup for reloading .308, which was part of picking that caliber. Have enough of everything I need to keep busy for a while.

The primary point of this build is to shoot sub moa at 200 yds (and 100 i'm sure). It'll cost me $150 just to join Sac Valley to be able to shoot at 1000 yards. Not something I'm likely to do until i'm confident and have pushed myself in increments out that far. Not so much worried about any incremental costs, just budgeting for the end of the year.

Just a heads up OP. Long range shooting is like getting a hamster. The hamster, like the rifle will be the cheap part. it's all the ancillary equipment that goes with it that drives up the cost.
I have the rifle, 700P in .308 with the 26" barrel and Leupold scope, I just haven't had it out where I can even try 500 yards.
I won't bust your balls by telling you how cheap I got this.


Do you reload? That will end up costing as much as the whole shooting set if you want precision reloads.
It's still all in good fun. The $$$ keeps it from getting boring.

I wanted a 700 5R Remington. But I found a Savage FCP 10 in 308, with a
5R barrel. 24" Fluted, threaded, Accu-Stock, Accu-Trigger, Magazine fed.
SKU #19055, not in Savage catalog. It was a special run for a distributor.
$829.00 + fees and taxes. Put a Primary Arms 4-14 scope on it with a 20 MOA base.
Took the Sac Valley long range clinic this spring. Was able to get out to 1000 yards. 4 shots out of 12 on a 24" x 36" target. 178 Amax HSM ammo.
I was very happy with the results. For my budget is was the best choice for a
starter long range rifle to see if this a shooting discipline I want to explore further. I already shoot IDPA, USPSA and 3 Gun so my shooting plate is already pretty full. The long range shooting is addicting. Just need more time and $$$! LOL!

No. You can shoot on the 1k range as a non member but, you have to shoot with one of the groups/clubs when they are on it. The Nor Cal Practical Precision rifle club has a practice day every first Sat on the month. You can come out for an additional 10 bucks and shoot 200, 300, 425, 500, 600, 800, 900, and 1k. 10 mins per line. Just make sure you are sighted in at 100 or 200. You can use JBM ballistics program to get you close for come ups. That and our guys are friendly and helpful and can provide assistance if needed.

When I get this rifle and get my loads dialed and am confident to start adding some yardage I'll be out there.

Search small mom n pop shops for deals. I have a CZ 550 American in jail right now. It's .308, has a box mag, 24.5' barrel and came with CZ rings and a Weaver scope. Price was $700 before tax and transfer. It's new but is a 2006 model according to the date code on the barrel.

Randall, first time ever shooting past 100 yards with this rifle, 1st time ever shooting past 500 yards, 6 shots out of 6 at 600 yds. 8 out of 10 at 800 yds.
Wind was kicking up out at Sac Valley in the afternoon when it was our turn to shoot. Never had to aim 72 in off a target with the wind as per our clinic instructor was guiding us. For me the Savage is a good value for what I wanted it to do. I do shoot a 18" JP and a Salient Benelli for 3 gun, so I do understand quality for value.

You'll have a lot of fun with the 308 for sure, but if it sticks........... you must refrain cause the second rifle is still $4 a round just for reloads.

If your in the East Bay, you can get onto BLM land in a hour and shoot easily out to 500 yards on any given day.

Look, don't let the stock hold you back from buying the Rem. IT is the better gun, for down the road. Get the gun, the tupper ware stock will still allow the gun to shoot MOA groups at 100 yards. Shoot it that way for a while, then upgrade the stock once you get a couple hundred bucks saved back up.

Checked that post out more than once. Besides a few factors that make it not for me, the added costs of travel and transfer fees put it enough above the budget to the point of being able to pretty much build up an sps varmint brand new.

Do you guys think the sps varmint is on or above par with the 10 FCP ?
