You guys are going to really like these rifles.When I got my rifle in 1986 in was very stiff to operate and marked up the brass pretty good as it went through the action. After about 200 rounds it smoothed right out and all the little glitches went away. I picked up a n early carbine in 2001 and it was used so already broke in. If yours are stiff, go ahead and use them a while before you tear into them and smooth things out with stones or craytex. Just my 2 cents.

I hope my rifle is good to go out of the box, and doesn't need to be returned for any reason. That is kind of a bummer what happened to you. No reason for a brand new in the box rifle to be stuck or jammed in any way. The tracking number says it will be delivered to my local gun store on Wed October 1st, so I guess I'll find out then. I hope mine turns out to be like the second rifle they sent you. I bought four boxes of Ultramax 45-70 Gov't in 405 grain. After that I will start reloading my own.

I assume the the problem with my first order was just a freak occurence. I suspect that the carrier hook got dislodged from the lever somehow during shipment and jammed the action. Yours should be fine and I'm sure you will enjoy the rifle.

Thanks for the info and insight. I didn't notice any marks on the brass, but I wasn't closely inspecting them. Given a choice I would have prefered a model w/o the safety or rebounding hammer but I was looking for a NIB rifle and the only models I found were the short rifle and the extra lite. It looks like Winchester has made a limited run of 16" barrel trapper models as I've seen several listed on Gunbroker. My brother-in-law recently picked up a used take-down model (octagonal long barrel and pistol grip) and we plan to bring both rifles out in the future to compare accuracy. I'm sure I'll enjoy mine until if/when my shoulder finally gives out!

I bought a used takedown winchester 1886 here on cg but it was is bad shape so I sent it to turnbull and had the octagon barrel cut down to 16, had the tang safety filled in and rebounding hammer eliminated. They also case hardened the receiver, reblued the barrel and refinished the wood. She's a beauty and I show her off every chance I get, I fired it once but the front sight was off a bit and I didn't have any tools with me. Can't wait to get her back out.

javithewrench that is a beauty for sure. What did it cost you to have all of that done by Turnbull? Do you have any pictures of it before you sent it out?

I hardly ever check out their site be careful OP always take all precautions but it sounds like you have a tracking number through so things should work out okay.

make sure to post lots of pictures and range report once you get it.

What I do is go for the sales offered by dealers only. They can't really afford to scam you because they have an FFL and emails and texts are evidence. I have purchased several guns from Armslist, but never from a private seller.

What a difference it is. I would have been proud to own it the way it was also though. I don't think it was in that bad of shape, at least not on the exterior. But it sure is a work of art now. What a difference. How does it shoot accuracy wise with that shorter barrel?

I took it out once but the front sight was slightly off and I didn't take any tools with me. I really don't think accuracy is improved by having a longer barrel on a 45/70, if anything I believe it looses velocity. I'll probably hear crap over saying that but it's a 45/70 and I don't plan on shooting at anything past 100-150 yards. I also have a browning 1886 with a 22" barrel , a ruger no.1 and a stainless marlin guide gun, all in 45/70.

Is a 24" barreled levergun a carbine? At what barrel length does a rifle become a carbine... etc.

You were right. Mine got to my local gun store yesterday and I went down to inspect it and start the 10 day waiting period. It functioned so smooth and silky that I just fell in love with it! I can't wait to get it out of jail.

those Japan 1886 (Winchester and Browning) are known for being very strong rifles that take the most powerful reloads.

I have the Browning 1886 Rifle and its a great rifle. First time I went out I shot some Trapdoor 45-70 loads through it. I fired 14 rounds and gave up. It was accurate, but I was in pain (getting old). My friend fired about 5 rounds and gave it back to me.

What the previous poster said about that crescent butt plate was correct. Its a great rifle though!
