Browning Model 1886 Made In Canada

Hello, I have a chance to buy a Browning Model 1886 from a guy. The rifle was made when Browning was manufacturing in Canada. It is a 24 inch barrel with a full length magazine tube, and chambered in 45-70. Is this gun any good? Or should I try for a newer one made in Japan?

are you sure it was made in Canada? it probably says Montreal, P.Q. on the barrel, right? that only shows Browning has a commercial presence in Canada.

If you look on the other side of the barrel I bet you find Made in Japan.

I think you are correct. So is the gun worth $1350?

I thought that they had manufactured in Canada. Thanks for letting me know that. Now I know it was made in Japan, just must be one of the older ones from Japan. It is a model 1886 SRC which I found out means Saddle Ring Carbine.

Not sure of the value but it's a very good gun.

              I didn't get it

I decided not to get it because the people who were selling it just wouldn't answer questions via email. They would reply to the emails, but without answering my questions. Instead I found a brand new in box, Winchester Model 1886 Short Rifle. It is beautiful and I can't wait to get it. This is the add where I found it. http://www.armslist.com/posts/254240...fle-45-70-govt.

I just brought my NIB 1886 short rifle to the range for the first time yesterday. Shooting at 200 yds the rifle was accurate with various factory and hand loads with no feeding issues. I found the higher powered loads are quite uncomfortable to shoot with the crescent stock/metal butt plate. After 4-5 rounds I had to switch to trapdoor loads for the remainder of the session.

The early Browning 86's are nice guns. No lawyer proof safety. Blue Book shows the carbine at $2200 @ 100%. Unless the one you were considering is really beat up you wouldn't get hurt at $1350.

I have both rifle and carbine in grade 1. The carbine butt is more comfortable to shoot. In fact, I installed a carbine butt on the rifle and it is much more pleasant to shoot.
Full power 45-70 loads can kill at both ends of the gun. Try the original M-1881 500 grain Frankford Arsenal load for Trapdoors! I don't know how those guys did it back then.

I couldn't get those people to answer on my inquiry, and when the finally did they just said, "I don't mean any disrespect but if you want it you better hurry because I have been getting all kinds of emails". So I bought a BNIB Winchester Model 1886 short rifle instead.

                      Very Sweet.

Sweet! That sounds like a quality rifle to me. I hope mine is the same way. Not that I can see anything at 200 yards anyway. But it would be nice to get a decent group at 100 yards. Mine was shipped today, I just got the tracking number, and it should be here next week. Well at the gun store anyway. The guy only sent me one picture of it, still in the box and it looked like it had a bunch of oil or something shiny all over the metal parts. He said that my request for a picture had been the only time that the box had ever even been opened.

So how was the fit and finish? How smooth was it? How was it for operating the lever and feeding rounds into the chamber? And most importantly, how was the sight picture on that old style buckhorn sights.

Thats the right move...no answers , no money. No answers is a tell tale sign of a bad deal or worse case, a scam.

The Japanese build some very nice rifles! I have an 1886 I bought new for $500 in 87 if I'm remembering right, have to dig out receipt and see.

                              Great report.

Wow that was a great range report. I really can't wait to get mine. Here is a picture that the dealer sent me from his shop in Pennsylvania. He said that he opened the box for the first time upon my request to see a picture of the actual rifle. I made that request because the add in Armslist said the pictures were representative of the rifle but not the actual rifle. Here it is.

I hope my rifle is good to go out of the box, and doesn't need to be returned for any reason. That is kind of a bummer what happened to you. No reason for a brand new in the box rifle to be stuck or jammed in any way. The tracking number says it will be delivered to my local gun store on Wed October 1st, so I guess I'll find out then. I hope mine turns out to be like the second rifle they sent you. I bought four boxes of Ultramax 45-70 Gov't in 405 grain. After that I will start reloading my own.
