Savage axis in 223! the trigger is alright to good after you tinker with it for 15 minutes.
I never really thought ar mags on a bolt gun was any sort of benefit.Comment

The hmr is a rimfire, the 17wsm is dead, and the .223/5.56nato is a good choice.I was thinking either 17HMR, 17WSM? or .223?
My brother has the MVP Predator model, thing is super accurate and pleasant to shoot. Hitting paper out to 300 is easy.
Surplus ammo is cheap, like 33cents a round and there are some good hunting rounds available for about a buck a round if you want to hunt coyotes.Comment

If you/he does not reload just remember when the A-holes start hoarding ammo for absolutely no reason other than selfishness 223 and 308 are the hardest and most expensive to get. But if you buy a few dozen boxes now it should last any sane shooter a good long time.Comment

17HMR
The rifles and ammo are pretty cheap and the accuracy is phenomenal. They are so much fun to shoot it is unbelievable. I have .223/556, 30-30, 308, 357, 444, and 17HMR. I would say the Savage 17HMR is the most fun to shoot.
I just ordered 350 rounds for $90.48 shipped = .26 cents per round!Comment

Rimfire vs centerfire
Stay away from the 17 wsm, I'm not overly impressed with that cartridge and ammo availability is terrible. The 17hmr is an excellent choice, I have a cz in that caliber and love it. No recoil to speak off and can watch your bullet impact on paper and varmints. The .223 is a lot of fun to, I reload so cost isn't an issue, although that being said factory ammo isn't pricey either unless you get into the match stuff. I have a remington 40x in .223 and it's certainly one of the most accurate firearms in my collection. Only complaint is that it's not a .222Comment
