    Next caliber?

Hey guys, my dad is looking for a new caliber bolt gun.
He wants something that's cheaper (caliber wise). I was thinking either 17HMR, 17WSM? or .223?
Mostly paper punching up to 200, and some small game MAYBE.
    All three are fairly cheaper.
Are there any other options? Less then .50 cents a round, a lighter recoil round and not a .22 rim fire. His budget is less then $500 but I think if he really likes it he will pay a little more.

We were looking at the mossburg MVP (the one that takes AR mags, I think it's that one) how's that one? I havnt looked at the price yet

If he wanted another semi I could help him but I have a handful of 9130s and a tikka T3 lite. So I know very little about bolt actions.

You've listed 3 cartridges but only two different calibers. .223/5.56 has been $1/round in the recent past.

Is 17HMR and 17WSM the same?

A x39 bolt gun would be awesome! Share ammo with the AKs. I didn't know that was a thing! I just bought .223 (tula, but .223) for $5.47 two weeks ago

.17HMR. Its awesome, as long as the wind isn't a problem.

And it's a great little rifle, too.

Since you've got a handful of Mosins, you also know that they're pretty inexpensive per round, too (milsurp ammo). Even the new-production Wolf/Tulammo rounds are just over 50 cents/round. Is handloading a possible consideration here? If so, then pretty much any standard round would be a good choice, including 7.62x54R.

For cheap, I'd say 7.62x54r. There are more rifles than just Mosins that shoot that cartridge.

CSACannoneer is telling you that .17 is the caliber so you have two calibers listed in three chamberings. The 17 WSM you have listed isn't a factory cartridge, the factory chambering is 17 WSSM.

The 17WSSM is basically dead and not really a viable choice. The 17 HMR is a rimfire and the 223 is a centerfire cartridge so the difference there is huge.

The 17 WSM is a new rimfire cartridge that Savage has chambered for the rifle is called the B Mag and I think Winchester has chambered their low wall single shot for it. or Savage is using their copy. IMO I would skip it for it has not been a reliable deal ammo and rifle have been sub par.

223 hands down. You can shoot cheap ammo, match ammo can be had for $0.75 a round on sale, cheap to reload too. Great selection of ammo that is everywhere and actually instock. Good luck finding 17wsm ammo. I sold a box of 50 rounds for $75 on gun broker. Also 223 can be had lead free for hunting in California for the new law.
