The knob make its a lot easier to manipulate. I shot my buddy's and it's better than hitting my hand on the scope. Thanks for the great input.

I totally agree! Just figured the money might be better spent on some ammo and range time. There are lots of options out there and knobs are definitely "Cool" and functional in the right application.

Just thought it was interesting, cause you said "do it right" then proceeded to show a method that is considered a big no-no in the welding world. Welding to Cast isn't usually recommended because like you stated it is a very ferrous metal by nature and tends to have many voids, leading to cracks, especially at the edges of welds (or tacks, cant tell if that's MIG or TIG). Either way I highly doubt you have enough weld on that small surface area to get the cast to proper temps to create the proper bond.

I'm not doubting your process, and I'm sure you haven't had any problems. I've herd a lot of good stuff about your work!

The handles are cast steel, not gray iron.
I am tig welding them, at about 30 amps.
I get full flow of the weld puddle between the stud and the handle.
I am not adding filler metal and I can assure you that I am getting good temperature to join them.

I have had about 4 or 5 of them break off out of perhaps 275 of them that I have done this way.
Taking a 2x4 to the bolt handle to try and get the bolt open on a stuck case will wreak all sorts of havoc including ripping the handle casting off of the bolt body...
I also do the screws between the bolt handle and the body like ken posted above when people want it done.

How do you break the bolt on a 700 ? I had mine for 30 years never crossed my mind wearing out the barrel yes

The bolt handle is one of 3 pieces heat-brazed together. It doesn't take much force to tear it right off. If the brazed joint is faulty (it happens...) it takes even less. I have had them peel off while chucked in a lathe and single pointing 5/16-24 threads. It had an obviously bad braze joint. The head is brazed on to the body as well. Remington designed a dowel pin in that joint so it would stay in "time" even if the brazing failed.

I've managed to rip a bolt handle off a R700. Back in the old days when I was not so well informed about the nuance of the 308.

I ran about 150 rounds of NATO spec 7.62 ammo out of my match chambered 308 hunting rifle over 2 days at a rifle class and smacked my self in the face hard with the handle in my hand.
