.223 for Hogs? Recommend a caliber please.

I wouldn't hog hunt with a .223, but if I were to, I'd get the heaviest bullet available.
My hog gun is a .300 win mag, I don't track a damn thing! Armor plates, tough hides, etc, don't matter when you shoot a big round. I've said it on these forums a bunch of times: .300 win mag at the range, tough on the shoulder/ blasting pigs, you don't even feel the recoil.

Im in the range of about 25 or so pigs I've harvested in my life and I've recovered a total of 2 bullets in all and they were in well over 200lb pigs.
Ive got a sweet piggy shot video on my Facebook page. Dropped a two hundred pounder at about 210 yds. It got up and ran about 100 yds, the farthest I've ever had to "track". But due to the big round, the bullet went straight through and I tracked what looked like a red paint can that had a big hole in it. Short story long, bigger is better for pigs.

Have a look at some of the videos of aerial feral pig control on YouTube. Ethics aside, .223 seems to work pretty well in a pest control role.

If your versed with the 223 and bush hunting it's ok a better choice and longer shots 270 to the 338 would all work well

Find them & drop them, period. I bought a Tikka superlite .308 for that purpose. I understand the "challenge" of using certain cartridges & the energy calculations, just not for hunting sometimes. My buddy swears by 22-250, yet he's never loaded a pig in his truck. "Oh, I'll damage some meat" yeah, that's the idea!

A buddy of mine in TX does all his pig hunting with a .300 WM.

Never shot one with a .223. Seen it done by folks on the "net". My dad slayed them with a 7MM mauser. Great penetration and no recoil. I mostly used a .303 until the lead ban took effect so I switched to the .308 Ruger scout.

We've got the opportunity for some good hog hunts close to us in the central valley. I've been looking at .223's for plinking and was hoping I might be able to use it for the occasional hog as well. Can that light caliber serve both purposes?

I wouldn't carry it as your primary pig rifle, but .223 can be used on some occasions. Most of what I've come across in Madera/Mariposa/Fresno county are pretty dang small, borderline piglet, and you could use a .223, but you never want to be undergunned when it comes to hogzilla and you always want to be ethical.

If you are going to use a .223, get the right round to use. Remington Hog Hammer in the 62gr, Federal Fusion 62gr, Winchester Razorback 64gr, Barnes TSX 62gr or 70gr, are all good rounds to take hogs.

Google hog kill shots and memorize the shot locations because if you don't hit them, you'll be chasing a wounded hog until h, e, double L, freezes over.

THIS GUY. I have not taken a hog before, but I'm out there. I set up a .223 AR until, after a few range sessions and deep thoughts about not wanting to track a wounded hog, I stepped up to a 6.8SPCII. It's still an intermediate cartridge but I have a lot more confidence in it as a one-shot killer of an ~175 lb. California Feral Pig at a couple hundred yards. I had stocked up on .223 Barnes TSX 62 gr. loads and also had a few boxes of Winchester Razorback on hand before I ordered a 6.8 Upper from Bison Armory. I was ready to rock with the right ammo, but then I thought I should do better, for the sake of an ethical hunt.

I hunt hogs in Tx with a Remington Model 7 6mm. I have been hunting this gun for 23 years and have not had any issues shooting through brush, branches or any other obstacle.
