more accurate, more powerful, cheaper, cheaper to shoot, plink or practice and more optics friendly than most lever guns. Similar quality 308 will not be as nice out of tge box snd ammo costs 3-4x as much.

I've killed many pigs with one ounce slugs out of a 16 gauge model 12. I specifically ended up switching to a .30-30 as the slug accuracy (my accuracy realistically) was pretty poor past about 75 yards. On the rare occasions I encountered pigs at 80-125 yards, I prefered a rifle and a 30-30 does fine.

If you've already got an AR, 6.8 would do fine. I'd pretty much go .308 though for selection of ammo. Savage makes some darn nice guns for the money. Try a savage hog hunter!

Has anyone tried the Winchester Razorback XT in .223rem on a hog? I'm just curious as Winchester has been advertising it as a "hog hunting round".

If you want to use an AR-15, buy a 6.8 SPC II, 6.5 Grendel, .50 Beowulf, or .458 Socom upper.

I imagine all of the folks still hunting with lead will continue to do so until the area they hunt is declared lead free sometime before 2019. In fact, I plan my CA hunts around areas where I can continue to use lead, as I've not developed a lead free load for my rifle yet.

Dunno if I'd feel comfortable purposely hunting pigs with a .223; but if I saw a small porker while I was out with a .223 rifle and could close the distance and I had decent ammo and a pig tag and had enough time and light to chase a wounded pig if need be I'd take the shot.

When I opened a park to pig control, they were shot by Deputy Sheriff's using AR-15's on their time off. Because they were looking for younger tastier pigs it worked well. However they couldn't shoot enough to reduce the population sufficiently, so I hired a trapper. The trapper shot them in the traps with a laser sighted .357 lever action shooting .38 Special cartridges. Later on he was permitted by DF&W to use a .22LR, to keep the noise down. If you get close enough and don't flinch - well you get the idea. Pigs aren't the brightest or possessed of great vision. I watched a big boar run past the dismounted equipment operator and almost collide with an idling bulldozer before he figured out that the big yellow grunting thing wasn't going to move. Some of that Barnes VOR-TX .223 ammo with the 55 grain TSX bullet should do the trick.

Haven't used that round but as far as a 223 goes it looks like it would work as good as any 223 try for a lung shot or neck and not any where else I've had big pigs go a long way after being shot thew both lungs with a 165 grain 3006 they do not suffer from shock like some animals !
If you shoot one in the shoulder with a 223 its going to go a long long way before it dies a big hog is a lot tougher then the little deer we have here

What did Spielberg use in his little poaching incident?

Steven Spielberg has been accused of slaughtering an animal — except his alleged victim is already extinct. The Oscar-winning director was denounced on Facebook for killing a dinosaur after Jay Branscomb posted a photo of him on his…

                                Bigger is better for pigs.

If you're set on an AR, get a 300 Blackout upper or an AR10 pattern rifle.
Or better yet, use a **12g with slugs** (that is if you can connect with vital organs / brain matter at range)

When it comes to killing animals, using a semi-adequate caliber is unethical. Just because a rifle looks cool or is "tactical" doesn't mean that it is a suitable hunting rig. Just my .02
