    Savage 250 round questions

    Hi Guys,

I inherited a 250 savage many years ago from a grandfather i barley knew. I have no information on the rifle that my grandmother could give me. I have never shot it but first thing i did was take it to a local gunsmith to be inspected. All is good with it.

My question is...how good is this round? The ballistics on this round are ok it seems. it has been around forever but never gained much popularity. Am I missing something here?

The rifle is a czech BRNO mauser but i think it was re-barreled and had a stock put on it. It has an very old school weaver mount and scope too. should i keep this rifle? I don't have much desire to shoot it and with the mods i doubt it will ever appreciate. As you know i have been watching GB and I would really like a 6.5 creed or a 308 i could shoot and re barrel. How could i figure out what its worth with the mods?

It is a great short to mid range Deer and varmint round it lags behind the 25-06 and 257 Roberts It will push a 100 gr bullet at 2900 fps or an 85 grainer at 3000 fps, Ammo is hard to find since it's on a seasonal deal but hand loading is straight forward. Don't re barrel it if you want something else just buy something else. I shoot the standard and the P.O Ackley version of the 250-3000 Savage. Post a pic right here.

250-3000 is an awesome classic round. Deer size and smaller. It is certainly more than sufficient for hunting in California.

What you describe would make a nice 150-200 yard deer gun. I would certainly keep and use it. Ammo is out there and available.

It's real name is the 250-3000 Savage and it's the parent cartridge of the 22.250. It was the first commercial, medium game cartridge to break the 3,000 fps barrier when it was developed. It was originally designed for a 100 grain bullet but Savage changed that to an 86 grain bullet just to make it shoot faster than 3,000 fps

I just don't know how interested i am in this round. I have a 223 and looking to get a 308 to eventually make a 6.5 so i think this would just take up space.

You know you want a modern rifle/caliber. This isn't the best base to build on/rebarrel.

You say this rifle/caliber isn't what you want. Get a 6/6.5 and be happy.

Someone may be just thrilled to buy this thing as is with the period add-ons.

Google the hell out of it, find a price that works, sell it and fund what you want to shoot. Thank the distant Gramps regardless. Always nice to be remembered.

                Only accurate riles are interesting

If it shoots well then I'd keep it and honor gramps. If you don't want to keep it, see if another relative would be happy with it. I try to keep firearms in the family and am loathe to trade or sell them.

I love my .250 Savage 99. Probably my favorite of many. As mentioned, it started out well, but then was surpassed by the .257 Roberts and others.

Sounds like you'd be best off buying a new rifle in the caliber you want. But please make sure this goes to a good home. Otherwise just put it back in the safe. You may regret selling it later in life.

I would agree. If it was a rifle I bought/traded and then decided I wanted something different, then I would sell. But something passed down from my grandparents, I would keep or pass to another relative.

Try it, you'll like it !
250 is an excellent round especially in a bolt weapon -
In a bolt weapon it can approach 257 ballistics --
Best to check twist, slow twist won't handle the heavy bullets -
100 gr is about max for the 14" twist -

I don't know your age, but you don't sound that interested in the family aspect of the rifle. Why don't you put it away and pick up something new more to your liking. I have found as I have gotten older that I enjoy shooting and hunting with my heritage guns. There is a certain connection with those earlier generations and I want my kids to enjoy that too when they are ready.

Without seeing a pic of it, I would say leave it as is, stow it in the safe and bring it out about 20 years from now. I'm sure it would be a head turner at the range. As mentioned above, put it away and pick up something more to your liking. There are plenty of high quality affordable rifles out there to fill that niche.

As for the round, it's a great round but 25 cal seems to have not caught on in this country very well. Also, the 250 Savage is the parent case/cartridge for the 22-250 Remington.

Its a great little round very similar to the 243. My grams gave me a old Savage 99 in 250 when I was a boy. Still have it. Ammo is not off the shelf so you will need to get it online or reload it. And even online your bullet optiins are sparse.

As others have said 250-3000 is a great classic round. You should keep it.
