Rifle Newb here...please advise

223. A 22RF once ammo is back.
Get an entry level rifle or better. Savage, Ruger American, Mossberg, Weatherby Vanguard, Rem(not a 770 or 710).

So after some poking around I have come across a Savage Model 10 and Axis XP. Direct comparisons don't jump out from a quick google search.

Anyone care to differentiate the 2?

The axis is the economy version but still a decent rifle. Spend the extra clams on the model 10.

A 17hmr might be a better choice then. You can find them for $0.20 a round still and its all quality ammo. Very capable of shooting tiny groups at 150+ yards, just watchout for wind!

^^ This -- I can shoot my .17 HMR for hours at 1/10th what my .308 costs to run, and shooting .17 at 100 with a light wind is like shooting the .308 at 600+ as far as wind doping and shooting challenge.

Good question, if you're looking at these rifles you're on the right track.

The 10 series is more the precision rifle platform comparative to the Remington 700. It's going to come in multiple variations, barrel lengths, twists, muzzle devises, drop magazines and shoot precision groups out of the box. This model has a ton of room for aftermarket upgrades and many people like swap barrels and cartridges on them often.

The axis is their more the little brother of the 10 and is often marketed as a hunting rifle. It will still shoot 1moa (many have said under 1 MOA although I haven't personally seen it [doesn't mean it's not true]), and 1 moa in the 20th century means precision rifle, but now-a-days accuracy is somewhat attainable in comparison and the Savage 10's just offer more capability but come with the extra price tag. You can pick up an Axis with a rail, rings and scope on the cheap - making is a very good rifle for the money.

You have that backwards. Its still tough to find 22lr ammo and its almost the same price as bulk 223 ammo when you do.

Shooting at 100 yards with a 22lr can be very frustrating for a new shooter. I love my 22's but a bolt action 223 is the right choice in this case.

More features w/ model 10

Both rifles are excellent. The 10 will have an Accu-Trigger and possibly an Accu-Stock(likely depends on the stock-they don't make wood Accu-Stocks). Package deals are convenient, but pay attention to who makes the scope. I'd rather pay extra for good glass than get stuck with an inferior scope.

Savage rifles are for idiots.

They are simple to work on yourself. There is a whole industry of aftermarket parts to thoroughly customize them.

Bolt action 22lr if you plan on shooting often.

If you only go a few times a year, go 223 or 308.

However I would stick to either a bolt rifle in .22 or .223, I think a .308 is a bit much to start out with. Also when begin shooting don't start at 100 yards, IMHO it's best to start out at 25 or 50 yards. Go out with a experienced shooter, get the fundamentals down 1st.

As far as gun goes, just do some research, it's going to depend on your budget.

Need help identifying rifle

Hi my name is Cole. I want to start out by stating that Im new to shooting. I have always been drawn to guns but growing up i only owned air-soft, bb, and pellet guns. I recently inherited some guns and i need help identifying and pricing a rifle that I don't plan on using much. I know that it was my grandfathers old hunting rifle and it has a custom octagon barrel chambered for a 300 weatherby 7mm. I have a few rounds and a lot of reloads but I have been warned that this gun is going to be expensive to shoot and very hard to find factory made ammo. I am way more interested in a have some other rifle good for target shooting. I have a few 22lr guns so I also want something with a bigger caliber. I am particularly interested in lever guns at the moment. All that aside can anyone help me identify this gun and help me get a ball-park price range for me. Any suggestions on a target rifle would be appreciated also. I will try to post some pictures, but this is my first attempt at a post in a forum.

Since 22 is still difficult to find I would just go with a 5.56/223 bolt for a first.

Looks like this is the direction I'm interested in. I just don't want to go through the endless pursuit of the .22 ammo search. I've also got a friend that can't say enough about his .17.

I'm thinking some sales may be upcoming with the onset of fall hunting season? Any experience with this?
