Learning how to judge the wind

GREAT POINT.
I have been schooled by not accounting for wind well above my position and the targets position when shooting from hill to hill with a small "valley" between the two positions. There is some science to wind reading, but those who understand the art really shine. I'm trying!
Wind across the landscape will do things that water in a stream will do.

I was gonna toss a comment out there....but reading the thread it seems y'all agree with my unspoken point (uhh....does that even make sense ?)

Wind is invisible, it can and does vary at differing increments of distance and altitude, wind speed reading instruments (of whatever sort) can and do lie, and can only read out at one spot anyway.

Even windsocks or flags fail to accurately tell you what to expect.

It's not art, it's flat out luck and some form of magical intuition that makes those uber long shots on a windy day possible.

Consistency is not luck. I've seen guys put many bullets on target in the wind.

I, myself, have put a great many bullet exactly where I wanted to, at very long distances, in heavy winds.

I've had more training than most in long range shooting, have all the toys to help with the readings and trig required.

You want me to lie and say there is a perfect solution to shooting in high winds ?
Ain't goin' there bud.....it's luck, you just haven't learned enough to know it, or are too stubborn to admit it.

I had a very good friend of mine take my .44mag revolver, quick draw and shoot, in 1 shot, a crow at about 550-600 yards.
He meant to shoot it, it was what he intended to hit.

So....since the intent was there are you trying to tell me it wasn't luck ?

Shot at the 1,000 yard line at Sac Valley again today. From morning until 11:30, the wind varied from 1 minute right to 6 minutes left. Once again, the mirage lied about half the time. It would move from right to left, while the flags showed the opposite, and the bullets agreed with the flags.

This BS about "reading" the grass, clouds, trees, or tea leaves is just that, BS!! Even the mirage, which at times is a GREAT indicator of what the wind is doing, is a dirty lying w#ore at times.

If you think you can prove otherwise, come on out and show us what you got. I would love to see it done on the rifle range, rather than just on a computer keyboard.

Like most say, you just have to get out and do it. Try, try, try... Watch and learn mirage and all the subtle clues from surrounding downwind and mid wind vegetation and and any item that is influenced by wind movement
