It will be a while until 700s are back on the shelf until the trigger recall gets fixed. When you do find one, try to find a 243 WIN. If you are like me, you will sell your sporter weight 308 after you shoot it a few times. They are good for hunting but not too much fun for target shooting.

Can't go wrong with Savage too. I just bought a Savage 10 PC 308. Comes with threaded barrel, accu-stock, accu-trigger, 1 piece mount for $775. Can't wait!

Since everyone is talking about their Savage, I got a 11/111 Trophy Hunter XP in 338 Win Mag (top in picture) and put a Boyds lightweight thumbhole stock on it, converting the trigger guard and magazines to metal, so not a plastic gun anymore. Oh, and Pachmyr recoil pad. It perfectly matches my Mark II in 22 LR (bottom in picture) that comes with the same style stock from Savage, and I got the rimfire version of the Nikon scope to match the Trophy Hunter. They're twins, just drastically different cartridges.

I don't think folks are reading the OP's stated objective. He isn't asking about shooting; he wants to pimp it out. Nothing beats a 700 for a pimped out tactical looking bolt, unless you want to jump straight to one of the new AI ugly sticks or something along those lines.

Play it safe and save some money.

1st rifle purchase, buy a Mosin Nagant.

A short action Remington 700 has more available aftermarket parts available for it than ALL other makes/models of rifles combined.

between a Remington 700 and Remington 770, go with the 700.

                    Savage AXIS

It is their entry level rifle. It can be had for around $350 or less. You can customize it six ways to sunday(at home), even barrel or caliber change. They are out of the box accurate.

Remington is going through a phase right now that has many loyal customers questioning their product.

I'll give all of you a heads up....and hurry too.

Go to your local...or not so local...Dick's Sporting Goods right now. Remington recalled the 700, so Dick's is selling their dealer rifle, the Savage M11 VT, for the Remington price. The VT is tagged at $579, but will sell for about $460 WITH scope. Get a Dick's credit card at the same time, and take off another 10%.

This will only be good for about another week.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero
