    Buying my first Bolt action rifle

    I'm thinking about getting a Remington 700, then changing the stock, basically, accessorizing it, making it look cool. Are there any regulations that I should be aware of such as the bullet button, barrel length, ect... I've looked for the flowchart, but didn't see any. How do the regulations work for this type of rifle?

    Barrel length over 16", no real regulations for a bolt action.

      I'm thinking about getting this one, but not quite sure if it's the Remington 700 or not. Is the Rem 770 the next iteration of the model, or is it a totally different one?

        Different rifle. Take a look at the 700 SPS models. Good price point and endless options. I'm having one rebarreled and action trued now.

          I'd get the 700.

            Not saying to get one, but check out the Savage Arms lineup. I absolutely love their selections. I've heard great things about those Remington also.

              Before the recall, a couple shops in my area had the 700 AAC-SD for $700 + tax & DROS. Looks like that guy is starting at $720 + shipping, then tax, transfer and DROS fees from your LGS.

                Flow chart is for Kali-"Assault Rifles", a bolt action isn't.

                Need >= 16" barrel (federal)
                Need >= 26" OAL (federal)
                Do not need >= Kali 30" OAL since that's for semis only.
                Suppressor is not permitted in Kali.
                Mags need to be <= 10, but can have >10 if legally possessed.
                .50 BMG "rifle" is not permitted unless registered.
                No incendiary ammunition
                No open carry
                ...probably other requirements I am forgetting. Overall, compliance is much easier than EBRs and such.

                  That model is for if you want to feel recoil but are not concerned with even being able to repeatably hit a barn....

                    Get the 700. Plenty of aftermarket parts and support for it. If you got the dough, get the 5r model which already comes with an HS stock. If you need to pimp it out, get the basic model and change/mod accordingly.

                      ^Yes, this. Though the 700 would not be my first choice, spend a few hundred more and get a 700 if you want to go full-tacticool because everyone and his brother makes tacticool **** for the 700. And, you'll end up spending much more than the entire price of a 770 on each tacticool upgrade component. A decent friggin bipod costs more than a 770.

                        Watch this for an accurate opinion of whether that rifle is worth a crap

                        The 770 is the junk successor to the 710. Don't let the model numbers fool you. The 770 isn't anything like a 700, and as CobraRed said it's only good for making noise and feeling recoil. It's not even something you can start with and then upgrade as you go along, since important components like the barrel are apparently press fit into the receiver.

                        Even if you start to think "well $345 isn't that bad compared to $600+ or whatever", no it isn't worth it because you might as well flush that $345 down the toilet. Save those pennies and get something(hell, anything) else. Hell, a decent barrel is going to cost you about the price of that 770, which should be a red flag.

                          The Remington 700 5R is a great rifle if you want to spend $1100 to $1200.
                          Check out the Savage line of rifles. I got a 10 FCP 5R in 308 for $830,
                          plus taxes and DROS. Came with Accu-Stock, Accu-Trigger, Magazine loaded.
                          Threaded barrel. 1 piece scope base, Fluted Barrel. SKU #19055 not on Savage web site. Special run for a distributor.
                          Shoots better than I can. Was able to get out to 1000 Yards with it, at the Sac Valley Long Range Clinic.
                          Great value for a good rifle.
                          If you can't shoot good, at least look good shooting

                            Went to all 3 of my LGS today. None have it in stock. They all mentioned of the recall. One of the 3 told me that his distributor sent 3K rifles back to the manufacture, and he thinks they'll be on the shelf in 3 weeks. One of the guys in those store tried to sell me a Hawa Howa (spelling) or something like that. but I insisted on the Rem 700. Anyway, I'll come back in 3 weeks. Thanks all for pitching in.

                              This would be my second choice if the Rem proves to be longer than 3 week wait.
