I've been looking at this myself.

I have a Remmington 700 SPS with a XLR chassis on it.
Bought it a year ago and it mostly sat in the safe.
I wouldn't think the chassis would add much in a hunting environment (perhaps mocking from buddies) but this thing is a tack driver out to 300 yards so far.
Need some better glass and some time to get up to Sacramento. Makes me wonder how it would be with factory stock.
Added a rifle basix trigger last week and that improved groups even more.
Given the availability of part options, I say a 700 is good to go.

The 5R looks very nice but to be honest with a 24" heavy barrel if I was going to go that route I'd keep the 10FCP-K with the 24" heavy barrel.

Honestly I'm less concerned about brand loyalty and more looking to find the elusive balance between barrel length, weight, accuracy and range.
For hunting Tikka, for all around use I would do something like this guy's (it's an FCP in mcmillan stock, barrel cut to 18"):

Would be heavier but more pleasant to shoot on the range than the lightweight hunting type rifles out there.

+1 on the Tikka T3 although I really like that 700 XCR Compact Tactical.

I just went through this. I was looking for more of a bench rifle, but did some research on general 308s, including on the net, at my range, and with some friends.

One thing to consider... and this is unconventional... Mossberg now has a new rifle line (or I assume it to be relatively new) called the MVP. Looks pretty decent. The one I shot in .223 shot like a house on fire... at 100yds, a 5-shot group under a dime. I imagine this to be true with other calibers, but cannot promise.

Like I said... just to consider.

Otherwise, I'll say Tikka as well.

Mossberg flex has 18 or 16" barrel in .223 or .308.

Can interchange stock parts with Flex Shotgun

                  Can use AR Optics.

M1A, when you run out of ammo. It can be used as a club or spear.

Looks more like an inspired by Accuracy International chassis knockoff...

You can hunt or bang steel with it out to 1K with 175 SMKs

Also is probably one of the most accurate rifles out of the box for around 1150.00

                              24" tube

HS Stock which is pretty decent.

These can run 12+ lbs. with scope/sling/bipod, some of the tactical guys complain about shooting them offhand.

You might want to consider a sporter weight and add on/up weight to a comfortable level for prone and off hand shooting out to 500 meters required for silhouette competition shooting or beyond in prone.

Well I was going to suggest the GSR since it has completely blown my mind in terms of versatility and accuracy, but another great choice besides the Tikka T3 would be any CZ USA product. Tikka and CZ make, in my opinion, the best bolt action rifles for the money.
