Okay, first thing out of the gate before anyone suggests it I have no interest in a Ruger GSR. I like Rugers just fine but the GSR does nothing for me.
With that out of the way, I'm looking around at .308 bolt actions for a general purpose rifle and am a bit torn on which one. I'm drawn towards the Savage Trophy Hunter XP and the Weatherby Vanguard II.
"What are you going to use it for?"
The eternal question. I'm looking for something I can take to the range and shoot out to 800 yards if I want to (not tiny groups just clean shots on a silhouette or steel), something I can take out hunting if I have the need, desire or requirement and something that in the mythical 'TEOTWAWKI' scenario could serve as a poor man's 'sniper rifle'. I don't want to have something so heavy need a hand truck to carry it but also not so light that two shots in and the barrel is hot enough to start shooting patterns.
I currently own a Savage .308 that I bought with far too much of the 'this would be useful for TEOTHWAWKI/SHTF!' in mind. It's heavy, long and I think really designed more for bench/prone shooting. I bought a Savage 10 FCP-K, Dednutz 20MOA one piece base, Nikom Monarch 5-20x, Harris bipod and an Accu-Shot monopod.
Yeah, it's cool and I like it but I think it's a bit too specialized for me, I'm not someone who is going to spend time reloading for the best round, logging shots and such. I'm just not in to that kind of shooting, nothing wrong with it, it's just not my interest or strength.
"How much do you want to spend?"
I don't know. I went a bit nuts on the 10 FCP-K and I don't want to do that again but I also am not looking at limiting myself to an 'Axis/770 budget' either. Moderately priced rifle (Trophy Hunter XP/Vanguard II/700/etc.) and decent glass, not Simmons/Bushnell but not USO/Nightforce either.
In order to meet the criteria listed above for range weight and accuracy what would be a good barrel length and profile and any make/models that fit the bill?
