Honestly Surgeon 591's were cheaper to the general public than a Deviant. Surgeon is not currently selling actions by themselves, they are in a transitional phase. They will have no problem building you a complete rifle on a 591 for $5k-$6k in a short period of time though. That being said, 591 actions NBIB command a higher price because you cannot get one. 591's are a blinged out 700 clone, Devaint's are a whole different animal.

I understand diminishing returns and supply & demand, but can anyone explain to me the practical differences between a blueprinted or otherwise worked over m700 action and say a Deviant or surgeon?

Custom actions have features that 700 actions will basically never have. After a 700 action is really blueprinted and the bolt is swapped out or bushed the 700 action becomes no cheaper and usually lacks some useful feature that the same priced custom action supplies. Common features that people seem to like are reduced bolt lift, left port right eject, integrated rail, integrated recoil lug, and others.

Having said that I bought a $615 blueprinted 700 action. You can't get a custom action for that, and I don't care about many features in this specific application so it was perfect for me. It's like anything else, you run what makes sense to run, and you control (and have a reason to control) everything you can control or you didn't do enough research. There will be times when the 700 action is the right solution, there will be times when it is not.

Thanks Milo, that does make sense, especially in the precision game, a world of $2000+ scopes, $400 barrels, $500 stocks and handloads running .60- $1.50.

personally I run a sporter savage 110 in 30-06, which all in is less than chamber job . I've been lucky and had several first round hits on clays at 600+ yards off a backpack, but I know the barrel will heat up after about 4-5 shots, which is fine, because I carry my guns on my person, they are not confined to a bench or sandbag. I'll upgrade as my needs evolve, but I've had so much fun thus far I haven't given it much thought.
