The M98 Mauser has an internal and external shoulder. While ideally both shoulders should make contact, either one will suffice, though the inner shoulder is preferred to the outer shoulder.

    Luck favors the prepared.

The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.

That's the way mine is. Seem like inner was making harder contact to me. Couldn't figure how machining relief in outer would do much in taking one off.

If installed properly, a Mauser 98 will have BOTH shoulders in contact.
The outer shoulder will be the one with more holding friction than the inner.
If a barrel was only torqued against the inner shoulder, it would not really be stuck as well as when it is tight on the outer shoulder.
When it's tight on the outer shoulder, the relief cuts mentioned above WILL help.

If your shop doesn't know this, well...., they should know this.

If they break out the torch, grab your stuff and run.
They aren't a real gunsmith shop if they don't know this basic step. Same thing is frequently done on U.S. 1917s to get the barrel out.
