    Mauser Expert

I am having the barrel replaced on my 1918 Dansig Kar 98a. the shop doing it has a good reputation. i guess the barrel did not want to come off. they are soaking it in oil. if that does not work is heating the receiver a option?. the bore on the old barrel is completely shot out. I do not want a wall hanger. i already will be over budget as far a value goes. So can i have the receiver re blued after heating it ?. will heat ruin the temper in the receiver heating it up.
Maybe i am putting the cart before the horse and it will finally come off.

There going to need to soak it for a few days !!! Think about how old it is and how much it's been work hardened and fused together !

One of my project Mauser restorations all but destroyed the barrel removing it from the action, which was ok since it was shot out anyways. Lots and lots of soaking, a little heat and a bfh

They need to machine a relief cut on the barrel right at the face of the receiver. It should then screw out easily.

Are you putting it back to military configuration? I removed one by cutting the shot out barrel off at about 6" then heating the barrel stub. It came off and didn't hurt it. I sent it off to be rebarreled and the smith had it tested for hardness.
If the shop has a good rep, I wouldn't worry about it.

thanks guys i feel better. this old girl deserves to be brought back to proper shooting condition. i did recently shoot it. every spring in the rifle needed to be replaced. she is no beauty. after WW1 the polish got a hold of it and altered the wood on the stock. then in 1939 the jerry's got it back. so it has been around the block. after buying the rifle and paying a extra 100 for a proper 98a barrel and now the installation work i will be into it way more than its real world value. it will be my only Mauser and i wanted a shooter with history.
              that i got.

This is the right way to do it.

If your shop doesn't know this, well...., they should know this.

No pics. Chuck the barreled action in a lathe and plunge a grooving or parting tool in approx .010"-.020" in front of the ring to a depth about .075". Will probably unscrew by hand.

K98 does not have a shoulder, barrel face butts against internal shoulder.

That's the part of the barrel I had to machine to get it to time on my VZ24.
