From what I can see, the only drawbacks to the GSR are the higher cost of the rifle itself, and the high cost of magazines. However, outfitting an MVP (Predator) with a rail and aperture sights would bring the price up to the same neighborhood as the GSR. And as to the magazines, I've seen Ruger-branded polymer mags that are pretty reasonable (~$25).

Which brings me to my question: what is the opinion here on the polymer GSR mags? Opinions on the Brownell's and Midway web sites seem generally positive, with the exception if a few saying the springs are too weak with feed issues. What have you guys seen?

    Thanks!
imo, the poly mags are the only way to go. much lighter, work flawlessly, and are able to top load thru the gun easily. i honestly can't stand the steel mag it came with.

as for people crying about a 16.5" barrel, i can tell you it barely makes a noticeable difference. you aren't losing any accuracy in a 308 with a 16" barrel, you just lose a little velocity. 600 yards is easy and i started shooting 1000 yards the other week and it handled it fine once i did my part.

What ammo and how much drop did you see at 1000yds?

        ^^^
I don't know for sure, but I'd bet that flyingmunky is shooting 175+ gn SMKs or similar. The GSR's 1:10" twist is better for longer bullets, and the longer bullets also tend to have better ballistic coefficients, letting them keep velocity better down range. Important for the GSR, since the barrel is shorter and has less muzzle velocity to give up.

That brings up something else: does anyone know what COAL the original or the newer poly mags allow?

        Thanks!

hand loaded 155gr amax at first, then 168gr nosler custom comp. the 155gr were a bit more sporadic than the 168gr.

as far as drop, i can't give you an exact number, or even a guess at that. i use a leatherwood 2-7x ler scope, and i just started to shoot at it for the heck of it towards the end of my last range day. i only used hold over to shoot the target; so much hold over that the target wasn't actually in the sight picture this was at the 1000yd target that's up in the hills at piru gun range, for those that might be familiar. i'll be going back out this wednesday most likely, so i'll try to be a little more scientific with it if i decide to shoot that far again.

edit: i do have some 175gr smk, so i may roll some up and take those out this week too to try and see the difference

Shot the MVP. Liked it. Haven't really seen the Ruger yet.

My GSR needed to go back to factory for work before I would shoot it; bolt was poor. Came back MUCH better, all on their nickel. Sighted in a EXPS3-2 on it and was knocking down steel boars @ 385+ meters with match ammo. The HWS does a credible job to 500 M. Still learning the platform. I might have bought the 18" SS version, but not available back in '12. The steel AICS mag design is less than wonderful if you want to top it off, but just carry another mag or two. Alpha makes a shorter 10 rd version that works fine. My vote is for the GSR.
