GSR vote here. That being said I'm ok with the whole scout scope thing. (Yeah they make rails to mount standard scopes too for the GSR) but I have friends that can't stand scout scopes

Both. The MVP in 223 and the Ruger in 308.

        I sense confusion...

Google and see what Jeff Cooper had to say about the "true Scout" rifle concept.

Hint...It's not close to an M1A.

If for target or hunting I would get the MVP if just for the cool factor get the Ruger. It's your money and you want to spend it NOW!

Got the ruger last week. Haven't fired it yet. But I love the way it feels

This was my original plan -- but eventually got rid of the Mossberg.

I'll say it this way. When it comes to Mossberg and Rossi, I don't know anyone who buys one and says they bought it because it was the finest firearm.

I vote for GSR. I had one and it was a blast to shoot!

Lever action! They were the scout rifles before there was a term for them! Pick up a nice revolver to match the caliber of your rifle and you are set ! Unless you go 45/70!

I've broken my wrist before, I'd prefer not to repeat that experience! The abuse my 45/70 puts on my shoulder I can only imagine what a hot round in that pistol would do.

I have both rifles. Love the GSR, smooth bolt, nice trigger, accurate rifle... but the cost of the mags has my wallet bursting into flame when I think about buying a few more.

Love the MVP Predator, too... nice trigger, accurate rifle, takes standard AR mags (except Magpul for the most part)... but the bolt is anything but smooth to operate. Good range toy to shoot from the bench, not so good for anything serious.

So... if you want a serious rifle that is a bit more spendy but will knock 'em down at a distance, get the GSR. If you're looking for an accurate range toy that you don't mind babying the bolt on to get smooth feeding, get the MVP. I wouldn't use the MVP Patrol on patrol, if you know what I mean... it gives me bad visions of a cop beating on the bolt handle 'cause he can't get it closed without issues.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Sorry to post in an old thread, but the opinions in here are really helpful.

From what I can see, the only drawbacks to the GSR are the higher cost of the rifle itself, and the high cost of magazines. However, outfitting an MVP (Predator) with a rail and aperture sights would bring the price up to the same neighborhood as the GSR. And as to the magazines, I've seen Ruger-branded polymer mags that are pretty reasonable (~$25).

Which brings me to my question: what is the opinion here on the polymer GSR mags? Opinions on the Brownell's and Midway web sites seem generally positive, with the exception if a few saying the springs are too weak with feed issues. What have you guys seen?

                                Thanks!
