Milotrain is pretty much right on the money here, if you want to shoot match high power, however that is a formal type of shooting not to be confused with recreational shooting which is what it sounds like the OP is looking for. I would suggest attending a match to see what goes on before signing up for a match. Lots of little things you need to know before jumping in, but if you like what you see, you can get your kit ready to go and have at it. Lots of good people, and lots of great knowledge to be found on the competition line.

Santa Margarita Gun Club has a Mid-Range match on Sunday 2-16-14 at Camp Pendleton on Range 103. It is a 300/500/600 yard prone slow fire match. Sighters and 20 rounds for record at each yard line. Iron sights or scoped rifles are gtg.

The next Across the Course (XTC) match is Saturday 3-29-14. Your M1A is gtg for that.

Hitting steel is fun but you can't tell how close your shots are.

If you go early, you can.
All the steel will have fresh paint on it each morning.
You can measure your group sizes with your reticle in your scope or spotting scope if you have a reticle in the spotter...

Also, come shoot the CAPRC matches at Angeles.
We often put paper out at 300yds they you will get to see your grouping on.
We also shoot smaller sized steel targets out to 600 and we will always know the size of the target.
If you can keep all your shots on an 8" circle at 600, you are doing pretty good...

San Luis Obispo Sportsman Association. They have a mountain range with varying steel plates out to around 400 yards or so. They have also recently set up a dueling tree across the left of the mountain range that is somewhere around
the 700 yd mark. It may even be farther than that, because you can barely see it with 9x magnification. They have some very talented local precision shooters that come out and smoke that dueling tree with their 300 Win Mag and 308 military style setups. It's definitely a sight to see.

slosa has a man sized target out on that 700 yard hill that is a snap to hit. just needed 15 mph worth of wind correction

Once a month there is either a 1000yd or Palma match out East of Cuyama.

PM me if you are serious about going out there. The matches are on the 3rd Sunday of the month and alternate between 1000yd and Palma. There is 4 or 5 target lanes and a 4' steel hanging. There are firing lines at 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1000 yards. They are usually out there on Saturday for practice and range maintenance. I believe that several people dry camp Saturday nights. You need to be there by 7:30am Sunday if you want to shoot a match.
