    Long distance rifle ranges

Where are the long distance rifle ranges or at least ranges 400 yards or over. Burro only does 200 yards and Angelus only has steel past 200 yards. Not real fond of shooting in the desert with the way things are now with anti gun PD's.

I really would like to see just how far I can accurately shoot, I know my rifle will make the distance but will I, that's the question.

    Thanks guys

I don't know about the LA area but you can head south on the 15 to Pala. Located between Temecula and Escondido, it goes out to 887 yds.

There are a number near you.

BRRC has carriers at 200 300 and 600 (steel at those plus 400 and 1k)
Ojai has one pit but firing points at 200-600
Coalinga has one pit but firing points at 200-1k
29 palms has steel past 1k
SMGC shoots on Pendleton which runs matches at 200,300,and 600 and also 1k and possibly a 800,900,1000 match all on paper.

All but 29palms runs at least one match a month, usually two.

There's also Piru with paper and steel at 100, 200, 300 and 400 yrds. From there is only steel continuing at 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 and 1000 yards.

Good call on Piru. No one mentioned Angeles? 210 off of Osborne. Out to 600 yards metal. Paper out to 300.

                The OP did.

If you really want to get some great experience look for the midrange matches at the above ranges. These are fairly casual matches (the SMGC is not casual, it's a "must have **** together" match) of three relays with 15 to 20 shots per relay. Targets are pulled after each shot, marked in the pits and run back up with a spotter disk and scoring disk. This is a great way to get a feel for 600 yard prone shooting.

Almost all midrange matches in the area let you run any rifle with any sights, including optics. It is worth going to see a match first before you shoot it and it is necessary to learn how to pull a target because when you aren't shooting you are pulling for someone else.

The series of videos below are excellent examples of proper target pulling, although the scoring locations have since changed. Thanks to calguns member OcabJ for the footage.

The benefit should be obvious but in case it isn't: You get to sit there in prone and shoot 20 rounds at 600 yards in various wind conditions while having constant target feedback and you never have to walk down and fix your target. NRA standard match targets are provided. You get to be on the line with people who are very good (In SoCal we have a large percentage of the best shooters in the country) and you get to pull targets for people who are better shooters than you so you can see what to work towards.

Santa Margarita Gun Club at Camp Pendleton holds monthly matches.

Across the Course (XTC) 200/300/600 yards

Mid-Range (MR) 600 yards. In February, the MR match is 300/500/600 yards.

Long Range (LR) 1000 yards. Sometimes 800/900/1000 yards.

The XTC matches are iron sights with some slow fire and some rapid fire.

The MR and LR are prone slow fire. F-Class targets are used for scoped rifles with front and rear rests. Every shooter takes a turn in the pits. Each shot is marked and scored.

More details are available at www.smgunclub.org. Check us out on Facebook at 'The Santa Margarita Gun Club'.

Actually I did mention Angelus I like that range but I'm looking for a paper range to see how well I can group at longer than normal distances. Hitting steel is fun but you can't tell how close your shots are.

This sound like it would be a great way to get started. I only have 60 rounds through this rifle but would like to see how well I can do once I get comfortable. How many different positions do they usually shoot and shots in a string (I think that's the way you say it)?

                      Thanks

Sounds good but shooting a bolt with glass but wouldn't mind shooting this after with my M1A later.

You can shoot XTC matches with a bolt gun, although not with glass.

Most midrange (3x600) and Long range (800,900,1000 or 3x1000) matches have an "any/any" category for whatever you want to bring with whatever sights you have.
