    Walmart 308 ammos

My local Walmart had a 500 loose rounds of American eagle xm80cs 308 for 360~ish. Good price, but are they decent ammo for target shooting?

Also which brand and model 308 ammos do you recommend at the walmart for target shooting?

if u buy it, save the brass and then start reloading your own rounds for cheap. u can get away with about $300-400 in equipment and start reloading "match" ammo.

If you live where you can buy mail order ammo, Palmetto is having a sale on XM80CS, which I believe has Lake City brass (great brass for reloading).

Price shipped is ~$319 for the 500 round case, and although still active I think that this price is ending soon.

XM80 is military grade machine gun ammo good for ~3 MOA. I hope you're not thinking of running it through your precision bolt gun?

That would be like running H-rated tires, using 87 octane, and only driving inside your garage with your WRX STi for "driving practice". It would also be contradictory to what you stated...

If you want to practice, you're better off dry firing inside your home every night than wasting gas going to the range to shoot XM80 through your SPS. Or, just shoot an SKS with cheap ammo if you just need to go BANG-BANG-BANG.

Of course there is target shooting and there is precision target shooting. Personally, since I'm not an operator or SEAL sniper, "target shooting" with minute-of-steel-plate accuracy is fine with me, and the XM80 works great for that. Match ammo is obviously better, and significantly more expensive, but is not necessary to me for the vast majority of my range days.

There's nothing wrong with that M80 brass now, if it Is fired from a mg that's different, does have a crimped primer pocket.

Red herring logical fallacy. "Minute-of-steel-plate-accuracy" might be fine with you, but you not being an operator or SEAL sniper has nothing to do with it.

In any case, if a person buys a sub-MOA gun and expensive optics because their goal is to become proficient 1 MOA shooter, they need to use a rig AND ammo that can at least shoot to their goal of 1 MOA.

If your goal is to be a proficient 3 MOA shooter, then you'll do fine with any standard M1A, M1, AR, FAL-variant. Precision bolt gun and expensive optics are not needed unless you just want to "look" like a precision shooter while laying on the ground behind a big expensive piece of glass.

You're really not offering enough information about your rifle, optics, or experience level for any of us to advise you on whether the ammo you are finding at Walmart will suit your needs.

WM could conceivably stock anything from "blasting" grade ammo to match grade ammo. Sounds like the American Eagle you found is the same stuff PSA is selling.

Personally, I enjoy the hell out of "blasting" grade ammo. In fact, I just received my order from PSA a couple of days ago. 500rds of XM80 for $319 to my door.

On the other hand, I've also got an equal amount of FGMM and Nosler match ammo in my inventory also. Different grades of ammo for different guns, and different shooting styles.

Based on your question, I'm guessing that you are new to .308 shooting, and probably haven't had your rifle long enough to be familiar with shooting it or where the trigger breaks or what to expect recoil wise, muzzle climb, etc.

I don't suggest wasting expensive match grade ammo during your "getting acquainted" stage with your rifle (assuming that's the case), especially if you haven't sighted your optic in yet. Just buy a couple boxes of factory production ammo (ie, Winchester white box, etc.) to get familiar with your rifles habits and get your optic in the ballpark, then buy some match grade stuff.

Better yet, consider getting involved in reloading and start rolling your own. I'm just starting to get involved with reloading myself.

I first bought some M80 ammo for my 700 simply because I wanted something to go bang with, I was pretty disappointed with it, 5 MOA. With that being said it was CBC brand, and I'm sure less than stellar quality(Although it was not magnetic, IIRC).

Anyways, I reload my SMK ammo for about 2/3 what store bought "cheap" ammo cost, and I don't even buy bulk or deal hunt on my bullets/powder.

With that being said, I'm sure LC or Winchester ammo is of at least slightly higher quality. But all in all it goes bang and throws lead in the general direction you are aiming, especially for the sake of getting a little feel for the recoil and trigger of your gun before using better quality ammo if it's a new gun.

FWIW also have seen at my local WalMArts 308/7.62 from a Turkish brand I had never heard of called MKE, distributed by ZQI. It said on the box is lot tested and rated for <1MOA, $18/box I believe. I have yet to test it though. Nnice looking ammo with shiny brass I can't wait to reload

The actual value of above $.02 is less than $.01 after taxes.

It appears there is a walmart trip in my near future.

I've seen the same stuff at my wm too, but never even considered checking it out. At $18 bucks a box, if their claims are true, that's a decent price.

                        Thanks for the tip.

Looked at the specs on their website and its still supposed to be M80, but since it says that it does seem interesting. My brother got some for his FAL and gave me a couple rounds to test with my 700, but I have not yet, so I can not attest to how true their claim is.

So m80 are pretty much for plinking ammo. Now how are they compared to pmc?
