    Ruger Gunsite Scout.

    Folks,

Just purchased a RGS from Guns Direct in Burbank. Any opinions good/bad/indifferent? All are welcome. A2

The Gunsite Scout is competent rifle. I'm not wild about the fore end factory rail though.

I'd be thinking about something like this prior to installing a scope:

Browse our collection of ghost ring sights made to fit your Remington, Winchester, Ruger, and Mossberg hunting rifles.

Laws against murder and attempted murder should have been the only gun control laws ever needed in America...

I love it, except the magazine, maybe it's just me but it takes me a while to load it, I believe you can buy an off market replacement, but I didn't get to it yet, anyhow I'm taking slow with shooting, ammo's expensive

I considered it but decided to get a regular M77 instead. I'd end up removing all the tacticool stuff and I'd want at least one flush mag.

I've had one for a while and like it. More accurate than I expected - most always 3 shots just under 1" @ 100 yds so long as I keep my eyes open. I use 168 BTHP or AMax and IMR 4064 or 4895.

I added the XS sight rail and use a Weaver 2.5X to 8X handgun scope. I use all 3 spacers and my ideal LOP would be about 17.5" so the longer eye relief pistol scope works fine. I use low Burris detatch rings and the Weaver just clears the rail. I replaced the FH with a PRI brake. It pretty much eliminates any recoil, very efficient but loud. I added a Kick Eeze "stick on" cheek piece, looks good & stays put. Gives an excellent cheek weld combined with the low scope mount.

Regarding the XS rail, I bought it because I'd like to be able to use a conventional scope once in a while. If you use the Ruger rail and rings the front bell of the scope will hit the rail.

I bought the thing only because I had a few extra bucks floating around and couldn't find a Mini 30 with a wood stock. I wasn't too crazy about the buy at first but after a few trips to the range, tweaking it a bit, liked it more and more.

I don't own one but a bunch of my friends do. I've been shooting theirs often and they are pretty accurate, handy, and I really like the whole scout rifle concept. Overall, it's a very nice package and very California compliant for backpacking and base camping purposes - which is one of the factors they considered when going this route (versus a now compliant centerfire semi-auto).

That said, I opted to not go that route. For me, there were many reasons, but the biggest is that I already have a similar package in a little 6.5 X 55 Swede that does all that the Ruger does for a fraction of the cost.

Again, it's a nice package and you should really enjoy it!
Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pringing ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.

Buy the polymer mags from ruger as you can top load. You can't do this with the steel ones.

I think they are a cool concept tho I have no desire to own one. On another note I see a whole lot of them up for sale soon after purchase...

I always take the Scout now when heading to BLM. A top favorite.

I also looked in to a RGS but ended up with a remington 700-AAC SD sps in 16.5".
It was a familiar action, easier to accurize and more after market support. Also if you get lucky you can find them in 308, 223, and 300blk.
Plus had a 40 remington rebate until dec 31.

One thing lacking is the hogue stock, there have been some issues but I haven't encountered them as I am just barley into my first 100rds trying to make this a great truck light weight pack rifle

Love mine. Added an XS rail and an accupoint TR24 1-4x w/ green triangle - although Im thinking of selling the accupoint and getting something a little more conventional (duplex or mil-dot reticle) and a little higher powered (3-9x maybe). The only other change may be a comp in place of the factory flash hider.

Mags are a little weird to load, I have 5 and 10rd plastic mags, but not a pain like my Marlin 22lr 7-rounders.

As long as you realize what its made for and use it in that capacity you should be fine.

I went with a 1.5-4 scout scope with quick disconnects on everything.
I can quickly take it down to iron sights and a 3 round flush top loading poly mag if desired for minimal configuration.

                          I love my GSR!
Added a Harris S-LM bipod, Alpha-Bravo bipod lock, Leupold QRW rings and Leupold FX-II scout scope.

                          Buy some Ruger polymer mags.

I like the scout. It's a good rifle.

Get the polymer mags, they are much better. I opted for a couple 10 rounders and one 3 rounder.
It is extremely fun to shoot, accurate, and relatively lightweight.
