    Remington 700 in 7.62x39?

I'm thinking of building a Remington 700 in 7.62x39 (or maybe even 7.62x54) for quite awhile

Main reason is ammo is cheap and extremely plentiful. Every now and then again end up in a 3rd world country ammo where this type of ammo is easily found.

    What do you guys think.

+1, I've read good things about that CZ bolt-action.

Not sure if its worth building a custom 7.62x39 rifle. Accuracy is not one of that rounds strong points and even if you did build to high accuracy the cheap rounds you want aren't going to give it to you. I personally don't custom build a rifle unless I can get close to 1/4 MOA. For 1/2 MOA and up I buy off the rack and call it a day.

It is a accurate round out to about 300yds then it drops like a rock.

Sacrilege. Like putting a VW engine in a Mercedes. Well, a Vega engine in a corvette anyway.

I was just reading up on that. 30-30 and 7.62x39 have very close ballistics.

7.62x54 might be a better choice.

Use a .308 diameter barrel and chamber with a 7.62 X 39 Lapua reamer. Forget the CIP Com-Bloc chamber. A .308 bore will shoot .310 stuff fine with no pressure problems, but that stuff is mostly junk. With good hand loads, match grade barrel, and .308 match bullets it can shoot sub half minute. I used a PTG bolt with a PPC bolt face, but it looks like the Rem 700 6.8 SPC bolt might work as well. Getting the 700 to feed properly from the magazine is the toughest part of the job, by a very large magnitude. Don't ask me how I know this...

I built a 7.62 X 39 Lapua/Brno 98 Mauser for 6mmIntl here on Calguns . We used a Krieger 4 groove .308 take-off barrel from an old X-course rifle. He did the bolt conversion and adapted it to take a single stack Romanian SKS mag
                Ask him how it shoots...

If you are doing this just to blast with cheap ammo, then the cost of the conversion will most likely make you crap your pants.

Man, if only they made a readily available bolt action rifle chambered in 7.62x54....
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

It could be done, but why?

Even the short action is too long. Somebody still makes a mini mauser length action that might be interesting to give you a really liteweight stalking rifle.

If you shoot crap surplus yes it drops, but not like a rock.

Yugo surplus is about 28 minutes from 200 out to 600 yards

My Model one AR 20" .310 bore with handloads and 150 Hornady/Speers run about 22 minutes from 200 out to 600 yards.

My .308 barreled 7.62x39mm Mauser action with 155 SMK/handloads is about 18 minutes from 200 out to 600 yards.

Considering a typical .308 win. and 168 SMK runs 16 minutes from 200 out to 600 yards the hand loaded 7.62x39 is not far behind.

Yes you have to read the wind but that is what long range shooting is about, if you want to take the easy way out buy a .308 win. or better yet a hotrod 6mm and never watch the wind.

I personally like the challenge and love to hear those experts who say you cannot do it with the 7.62x39 cartridge.

If you barrel with a .308 bore and shoot .308 bullets the cartridge comes alive and is cheap on powder for a 100-600 yard cartridge.
