Optics Question

Look at how much gap you have between the bell of the scope and the rifle. If you go up by 4mm by the bell of the scope, divide it by two and check if you have enough space to put it in there. Most guys run their scopes way too high anyway, and could get it to fit better but for some reason on guns like this they like them floated way up high, or just don't know better. My mossberg MVP has about 1mm or so between the bell of the rifle and the barrel.

IMHO: I have the bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16x 42mm side focus. I love this scope, I have 2 on my hunting rifles (375, 30-06). They are perfect for long action rifles. These are very under rated optics.

Consider a fixed power, 10x or 12x since these magnifications are generally work pretty well at all distances. It gets pretty expensive if you want to equip all your rifles with a specific quality optic. I got a SWFA fixed 12x to use as a burner scope if I want to test drive a rifle, and it works just fine for hitting targets of various ranges. The non-HD versions are $299 for the various fixed power scopes. The desired 16-20x as stated in the OP is too much magnification, IMHO, for most uses in a Savage Model 11 in .300 WinMag. The gun is going to be quite light with a hell of a recoil. A larger scope with more magnification will make the gun really top heavy, and the recoil will probably cause you to lose the target in the scope at most distances.

Another vote for SWFA SS series! I'll be picking up a 10x42 here soon.

I guess many of you don't go hunting or else you would recommend a variable scope. His model 11 is a hunting rifle.

I have a hunting scope on my remington 700. Basch & Lomb 3-9X40
Works great, and I have no issues with it. But I dont hunt, I shoot paper targets and am interested in more of a target scope for long range.
