They have this sale every year. I bought one last year in .308, it's well worth $400.

You're mixing up 2 companies. Axis is the Savage and the 770 series is the remington line.

The problem, from mine point of view, with the Remington 22-250 is that they use a slow rate of twist - 1 in 12 or 1 in 14 IIRC. I have their VSSF II in 22-250 and am limited to bullets of pretty much 62, maybe 69 grains and less. All that potential and limited weight.

Every caliber in the varmint model has the 1:12 twist. (if your using it for varmints than yeah smaller bullets are better). Have you tried heavier bullets? I know that many of the guys that own the .308 1:12 twist still shoot 175SMK with great results.

Varmints are pretty good guns. If its for a decent price snag it. Look for the MFG rebate I was told dicks and rem have that time to time.

Was looking at getting one of these too. According to The Hide it's the same barreled action as an SPS Varmint. Since it's an ADL I'd just get new bottom metal, ditch the pos stock and scope for it and drop it in something nice like a manners. You'd be saving money over doing the same with a standard SPS Varmint.

OK got me ,but I don't believe the 770 is a real 700 action.Better off with an ADL and switch the magazine parts out

                      NEVER BUY A 770!!

Biggest POS Remington has ever made. It's basically a crap half azzed 700 for cheap azzes looking to save money. Cheap in all the wrong ways.

Buy a Savage 10/11 110/110 action and call it a good day. Buy a remington 700 5R tactical .308/.300wm and have a GREAT rifle all day. I would definitely go for either one. Start off on a GAP Templar action and get a good bartlein barrel. Run whatever bolt and chassis that you'd want to use, and call it WONDERFUL when you build it in your caliber. It can be a sweet setup for WELL under 2 grand. GAP rifles you can get for 3k. I'd do a custom build though the way you want. Anyway, good luck with what you buy but I'd go with a 700 5R .300wm.

You're going to earn every penny of your savings.....Went there last year to the then new Salinas store. First I call up on Wednesday before Thanksgiving to ask how many in .308 they have, the guy says "we got plenty".

Go to the Salinas store at 10:30 and the line is 20 deep (luckily not everyone was getting a rifle). I end up being the 5th guy in the gun line and the last one to get a Varmint ADL in .308?! They were taking 30-40 mins to process the paperwork per person. By the time it was my turn, there's about 20-30 people behind me. I told the counter guy, he better let the rest of em know the last .308 was sold. Could you imagine waiting 4-5 hours in line and finding out the gun you wanted was sold 4.5 hours earlier?!

Complete FUBAR, but the rifle is a good starter rifle for the money. Good luck!
