Ruger M77 30-06 to .25-06?

I have a Ruger M77 chambered in .30-06. I don't enjoy shooting it, and I already have a bolt gun in .308 win, and a LR-308. Would it be worth it to re-barrel it to .25-06? I thought it might make the Ruger into something I might could use more for a coyote/deer rifle.

Have you tried installing a limbsaver or 2? I have a bad shoulder and was considering the same option until switch to 2 recoil pads instead of the 1 factory one. Just throwing it out there.

No it's not worth it unless it has some heavy sentimental value to you. It is cheaper better faster to sell it and buy it new in a caliber you like better.

I've always liked the .25-06 and think it'd be a fun project. Also if you have .30-06 brass then you have the brass you need. Lastly apparently WC857 pulldown (which you can actually find, and is $75/8#) works well in it according to jeff bartlett.

My dad bought his Ruger M77 back in the day and its a .25-06. Great gun best pronghorn gun ever! That round is a flat shooting round. Highly recommend getting one. My dads is the heavy barrel and is in really nice shape. If your only deer hunting and coyote hunting 30-06 is kinda over kill in my opinion. But if you are pig hunting or elk highly recommend the 30-06. .25-06 wont kill your shoulder either.

If its just a deer rifle it isn't like you're going to shoot it alot. If you want to shoot it more learn to cast or buy cast bullets and find powders like trail boss or even unique. I shoot 150's with 15-17 grains of TB in my '06 and its sooooooo much fun. Cast bullets and 10-12 grains unique is also. They're called mouse fart loads.

Lots of good practice too. Very accurate out to 100-200 yds. Deadly on small game. Great for 11 y/o kids to learn to shoot too .

I would put a nice douglas or shilen slightly heavy barrel on it. Make it a long range tack driver. I'm going to turn my worn 77 in 270win into some kind of 6mm/243.

Thanks for all the good info. The gun does have some sentimental value, my father in law gave it to me. I have plenty of .30-06 brass to neck down. I usually hunt coyote's with my blackout, but I thought it would be nice to have something flatter shooting to reach out past two hundred yards.

If it is a tang safety and you like the safety placement like I do then it is worth it. I have had 2 rebarreled with Douglas barrels and one is a tack driver. The other I have not shot yet. The 3rd one was a 223varmit rifle (Rem 700) and I have had a scope problem but it shoots also.

If it is a MKII then just sell it and buy a new one.
I will cost about $350-385 with all thew shipping to do mine. ITD Custom Gun in Ohio did mine and did a great job. I used a SS barrel.

I have one in .300 Win. Mag, and there are reduced loadings developed for it. Have you investigated that possibility? Remington makes a managed recoil round for it with a 125 Gr. bullet.

For the money, it might be more worthwhile to sell it and buy what you want, custom work isn't cheap anymore. Also consider doing some handloading, as 'ol shooter said, the .30-06 has sooooo many options for handloading - 100 grains to 220 grains, the '06 can do it, slow or fast! The .25-06 is great and all, but there wasn't anything I could get it to do that the .270 can't already do.

Sentimental value all the reason you need to keep it. Because of that if it was me I'd keep it as is and get another one in 25-06.

It only takes a basic rebarrel to swap from 30-06 to 25-06.
I could do that job in an afternoon if you decide you want to do it...
