I have two 700's chambered in 243. One is nice, and one is old and ugly. So if one becomes a 308, its not like I'm not ditching my coyote gun......diverssify, ssee.....And I don't have a .308. I was thinking of going the route of the op, but if I already have one, what the heck.I'd caution you against the conversion only because the .243 is a pretty great round which is very capable. What do you want the .308 for?
If you are looking to rebuild it then you'll want to find a gunsmith, this is not an at home project unless you already know how to do it, own a lathe and know how to chamber a barrel. They can source everything for you. Barrels run the gamut from $75 pull offs on gunbroker to $400 cut rifled and custom profiled barrels, you need to know what you want to do with it first.
I did see the 700 adl for $399 at sportsmans warehouse today.Last edited by Forrestchump; 09-15-2013, 7:15 PM.Thirty magazine clips!

The 6mm Remington is a long action cartridge that burns more powder than a 243 winchester and wears out barrels faster with only a small gain in velocity.
A 6mm barrel groove size is 0.243".Randall Rausch

They are both overbore cartridges. Barrel life is minimal compared other rounds, like the 308. You will be fortunate to get 2000 rounds out of either before the barrel gives it up.Comment

I already knew 6mm & 243 used same bullets. I have a Remington 660(short action) in 6mm Rem. It wont gain anything on the 243 with same 20" barrel except muzzle flash. With 24" barrel it has a slight gain. In a long action seems it would gain even more because of ability to seat bullets longer?Last edited by TMB 1; 09-16-2013, 9:29 AM.sigpic
