Another Rem 700 Question

Ok just want to ask where you guys have seen the best deals for these rifles. Im looking into just buying a basic SPS with a 24in barrel in .308. Cant seem to find any sales going on for them right now and haven't really seen any recently. Thanks for the help.

If I were in the market for one, I'd be all over that price. Just the bare action will cost that much, and the custom barrel I have on order is $575.00.

I purchased two Remington rifles in the 1970's and they are still around, although having been rebarrled many times. Good investment.

That gun is only about $30 over wholesale. Why even bother being a retailer? You can get the guns for the same price as FFLs.

Sportsmen warehouse has the ADL for 399.99 and wondering if the 700 actions are the same across the model.

Someone said just by the cheapest 700 and rebuild it later down the road.

If you just buy a cheap 700, can you change the caliber by buying a barrel and bolt? Say you got Uncle Darryl's old 30-06 or .243 and you wanted to make a nice .308 out of it. Is that possible?

Just remember that there is long action and short action. Its ok to convert to a long action to a short action cartridge, but a short action can't accommodate the longer cartridges.

You mean alter the gun to take those calibers? A new barrel. AS stated the bolt will work on all those calibers.

Yes. That one too. Although if it were me, and I was going to re-barrel a gun, I'd go to Remington 6mm or 6.5mm before .243. Just because the 6mm stuff has a bit longer barrel life than .243.

A barrel chambered in the round mounted to your action and properly headspaced. If you want an internal or external magazine then you would need to get matching bottom metal but if you just want to shoot it single shot then you are fine. There are also many of the above rounds that are based on a other cases so a rifle in .30-06 shouldn't have a problem with it's internal magazine holding .25-06 rounds.

Perfect! I have an old .243 and would like to build a 308 out of it. What's a good website to look for the pieces I need? Barrel, bottom metal, stock, etc

I'd caution you against the conversion only because the .243 is a pretty great round which is very capable. What do you want the .308 for?

If you are looking to rebuild it then you'll want to find a gunsmith, this is not an at home project unless you already know how to do it, own a lathe and know how to chamber a barrel. They can source everything for you. Barrels run the gamut from $75 pull offs on gunbroker to $400 cut rifled and custom profiled barrels, you need to know what you want to do with it first.
