As a 'survival rifle' (i.e. something I might leave in the camp trailer for taking targets of opportunity while in/near camp) that's pretty neat; but the handgun with a pistol brace might be neater.

5.7x28 or 22LR is fine, or even 22 Mag, but 22 LR will be easier to find if you don't have a store of ammo with it.

Either way, I can imagine going on a fishing trip and living out of the trailer just to realize "Oh hey, rabbits opened last weekend and I totally forgot about it and I'm surrounded by cottontails at my super secret trout filled fishing hole! Good thing I just happen to have my handy dandy 'survival gun'".

Similar to my concept for making a super minimalist single shot bolt action based on AR-barrel and butchered AR upper and butchered BCG with little spug bolt handle welded on to what is left of the bolt.

Having a barrel swap will be an excellent addition to add .22's

Lack of iron sights. A “survival” type of weapon shouldn’t rely only on glass or electronic sighting systems.

Separate components easily lost when not assembled.

Small likelihood of ever seeing actual production in numbers to support parts replacement.
pretty much this, especially the .223

this is why I'd like to do a minimalist bolt action using AR-15 barrel and parts and a butchered front half of AR's BCG, with a little twig welded somewhere for a bolt. I fig once I figure out a good way to butcher an AR into minimalist bolt action that would open up a whole universe of AR calibers.

I plan on making it so minimalist and lite-weight one of the features will be a stock of stamped metal frame that will accept and use standard USGI canteen's bottom as butt-plate, because it makes a reasonable butt-plate shape and you'd want the extra 2.25-3lbs of mass, because you always want to carry water and the rest of the gun might be under 3lbs.

Maybe the stock would be a tube where the end fits over the round cap of the canteen, with a couple arms to set on the canteen's shoulders and strap to pull canteen tight into the tube/arms. When disassembled the barrel could fit partly inside the tube for extra pack-ability.

Watch the original "Day of the Jackal" That gun should have been what they were trying for.
