NEW Lever Rifle from Smith & Wesson!

It's the new Smith & Wesson model 1854.
It Looks like all the YouTube videos are exactly 4 hours old and I picked what I thought was the best one (mainly because their rep. said the prices were only going to be $12.79 for the standard .44 Magnum model and $34.99 for the de-luxe wood stock model!)
Finally, someone's coming Way down in prices.

    * Edited to add that I was just making a joke about how the Smith & Wesson representative in the video verbally quoted their prices, in my opinion to make them seem lower marketing type trick. Items that are actually $1,279.00. Being quoted as "$12.79". If you watch the whole video you'll hear him say it.
What he actually meant was that the black plastic modern style stock model was estimated to sell for $1,279.00 and their deluxe wood stock model (that is "limited" to 1854 units made) will be selling for $3,499.00.
I want to make that clear because a Calguns member below ( W.R.Buchanan / Randy, who is in the industry, at shot show and I respect his professional opinions) posted that "...they are not $4,000". My joke about their prices might have confused some other people about their price being $4,000.

Also, according to someone below $12,79.00 is coincidentally the exact same price for the wood stock Ruger / Marlin already in production.*

Maybe tell us what caliber should be next after .44 magnum? Or any thoughts on this new lever gun?

Well, for me personally, $3,499.00 is WAY over what I'm willing to pay for a pistol cartridge lever action rifle with a lumber stock (not a plastic stock rifle person).

I'll stick with the Marlin (by Ruger) 1894.

I saw some photos just a few minutes ago of this one... and, for example, the tube mag follower rod lock doesn't look very svelte, such as one would find on an older Marlin rimfire, for example.

In fact, my first impression from this distance is that it may be no more refined than any modern Henry, even though those are perfectly functional firearms.

Give me, please, a Winchester or a JM Marlin any day and I'll correct their quirks as I have with eight examples over the last 10 years.

That said, good luck to S&W. May they enjoy a long, successful run of these things.

$1,279 for plastic version??. That?s a bit much. Price doesn?t make it attractive compared to Henry or Ruger Marlin.

They?ll probably go for a 460/454/45 Colt or 500 mag version later on. Gotta make something bigger to differentiate.

They should have started off in .500 S&W Magnum and worked their way down caliber wise over time.

If they make it in .41 Magnum I'm in. My Model 57 needs a companion.

The Henry AR Mag lever looks better, but needs a big bore version to catch my attention. Maybe .400 Legend?

edit: okay, so after watching a few videos and looking at the pics, they did a pretty damn good job blending Marlin and Henry features (although that flat trigger just looks offensive to me). Would definitely be curious to see if they could do a .454 Casull or either of the S&W X-frame cartridges.

Every comment so far has made some great points.

That is a lot of money for something that a few other manufacturers have been producing for many many years.

Unless you're a hardcore Smith & Wesson fan (and I'm somewhat guilty of that) I think a lot of folks who have lever actions already probably won't be running to the stores to buy them.
So that leaves the new to lever gun folks and for those folks I think the better caliber would have been starting with a 357 Magnum that takes 38 rounds to match their revolvers, if they even have one to go with their 9 mm pistol.

That said I do think they're execution is pretty nice with the exception of the kind of bulky magazine tube lock knob, as someone else mentioned.

Yes it's got some new design features like a built-in swing stud hole mount but I don't think those small benefits are going to make it a super hot seller.

I can't think of a single reason why this is more compelling than any current lever action. And there upgraded wood sample picture, without even discussing the price, looks too glossy and busy for my tastes. Maybe they have cool plans to do something interesting, but this first launch isn't that. Also the name is kinda annoying.

Big miss on the caliber IMO. They would find more buyers for 357 than 44. However it will be hard to stand out with Ruger/Marlin coming with 357.

To stand out they should have done a 460, that can also run 454 and 45LC. That will be interesting, especially the velocity 460 may get out of a longer barrel.

The tacticool gun will sell, not so much for the $2220.00 wood upgrade. Ouch!

Love the blued/wood gun. Not a fan of the tacticool

Also, no checkering on the wood stock model. For that kind of money you should see some elegant hand checkering (at least).
