i suppose the 24" barrel would be capable of higher velocities with a longer sight radius and extra weight, so perhaps a potential for more accuracy downrange for longer shots.
obviously the shorter barrel may be easier to handle and a bit quicker.
are you planning to shoot long range pistol caliber matches?

Not sure about rossi models , with 24inch I'm sure tube capacity is tad bigger too . Like TheLBC mentioned , what is the purpose of this rifle ? Hunting or target ?

I would like to replicate the 44-40 lever action rifles of the late 1800’s, with the various loads I can produce, both modest plinking and higher power for hogs and varmints. I have 16” barreled 45 Colt, a 16” barreled 38/357 (which is fantastic) and a Winchester 94 in 30-30 with. 20” barrel and I love them all.
Now I want to venture into 44 Mag.

And the 24” Octagon Barrel is my priority, now.

I know it sounds silly, but it keeps me outa bars and away from Fast women.

And thank you both for your time.

24"+ octagon lever guns have a special place in my heart. They're not as quick handling or light as shorter barrels, but they just feel so good.

Advantage is only velocity... so extra speed..

Out weigh that with weight and balance, then decide

My wife thinks I only have 3 guns

Since you already own and shoot some sweet-handling, shorter-barreled lever carbines, WHY NOT? take advantage of the longer barrel for all the reasons you and Spyder have posted?

I think it's a win/win for you. It sounds great.

The extra weight is also an advantage.
It makes the gun easier to stabilize on target.
It also makes the gun recoil less.

OP, be prepared to use some larger diameter bullets. Maybe try .431 to start if your standard loads don't shoot well.

I had s Rossi .357 in a 24" barrel. I kick myself for selling it. They're a little heavy but I've read that they use the same barrel blanks so the 44 should be a little lighter.

The sight radius was key for my old eyes. That and a ghost ring bullseye sight.

Good luck. I think I saw the gun your looking at on Buds a few days ago.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

                    I think I see where you're headed

Longer barrel will be schweet when you mount that tang rear and front globe sight.

My Navy arms 45Lc with a 24” octagonal barrel is a sweet shooter. With my mouse fart cowboy loads, (597 fps from a 4 12/“ barreled Vaquero) it shoots a 200gr at 947 fps. That gun should be fun with 44 magnum.

The 24" octagonal barrel is very front heavy.

Thank you all, the vote is in: I’m going for the 24” Octagon Barrel for my near future project, I will die a Happy Man..

Sight radius and balance are going to be your realistic differences.

if joining the army or police, maybe listen to exp operators on what gun to get because you wont be able to change your mind so easy once shooting starts.

for Olde West funs, get the one that tickles your fancy.
