I found a beautiful 1947 at the gun show a couple months back, chambered in 32 Win Special. Got it for $1,000 or $1,100 I can't remember. Notice the longer forestock in front of the barrel band, I think they shortened it a bit in 1950. I've shot this gun and it is an absolute joy.

These guns are sexy as hell IMO.

The angled screws on the receiver.

Also I bought a pre64 .32 WS a few years back and paid way less than 1k. I want to believe the rifle is a 30s build.

My Marlin 39A was $127.00 in 1977 (on sale, 10% off). I wouldn't take $1,000.00 for it today.

I'll take $1,000 for mine, and I have a 39A set up for silhouette, complete with tang sight and Lyman 17. I'll take $1,000 for that one, too.......... anybody?

Some day I’ll have to submit a story to American Rifleman about mine. Been in our family since 1898, and made in 1896. .32-40 with a Hex barrel. The family took it overseas on assignments regularly. My dad actually used it tiger hunting in IndoChina in 1950 with the emperor of Indochina. In the late 1950s, my mom used it bear hunting in Hokkaido, Japan. While in Japan it was gone over from sight to stock, with the wood replaced with tiger-eye maple, and quite a fair amount of silver-inlaid engravings. It a stunning rifle. Definitely something you would see on the cover of AR. It shoots quite well. I shoot reloads, and even pour my own bullets for it. In my library is the head of a buck my dad took with it in Maine around 1930.

I concur, the older Model 1894s are something special!

Tip to shooters and reloaders: 32-40 brass can be made from 30-30 brass. Just run it through your 32-40 dies.

A pre 64" 30-30 winchester is at the top of my bucket list. When did they change the ejection from straight up to angled out the top? Come to think of it, a pre 74' would be nice to.

Hmm, so for me the best length of barrel is 30″. For a side-by-side shotgun, 28″ is the perfect length, though a lightweight 30″ can do the job equally well.

30" barrel length in a rifle would be very front heavy, especially with the added weight of the magazine tube. I have tried to like an 1873 with a 24" barrel and it would not work for me as a recreational plinker. 20" (or even shorter down to 16") would work best for me personally (on lever actions).

Why do you say this? That's an awfully long rifle barrel. What kind of shooting do you do?
