So most actions are repeaters? Thinking about getting one of those Savage Magnum Target 338s to build on.Comment

Most of the shooters are single loading because the bullets are really long.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

Figured, so the Savage being a single shot receiver might be a good move. Assuming it has enough room.Comment

The Savages I have seen at our matches all shoot pretty good.
I actually have one in 338 Lapua Ackley Improved.
The advantage of the single shot receiver is it is stiffer so it allows for a longer and heavier barrel and gives more bedding surface.
If you use a barrel block you remove this from the equation because there is essentially no barrel weight length stress applied to the action or the bedding.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

Room for what?
I have a 116 that's been through 300wm, 7/338LI, and now has a 33XC barrel on it. It ejects the 33XC brass fine, but the bolt needs to be released to pull an unfired round. Barrels have ranged from 30" Bartlein HV to 32" straight tapers that were 1" at the muzzle.
The feeding port cutout is great to talk about on the internet, but the bottom line is the only thing holding the back of the action down are 4 threads of a 1/4"x28 bolt, only 2 of which are completely loaded. Starting out in ELR, guys with magazine cut outs in their actions will be beating you for awhile because they're focused on things that actually matter.
The 33XC is one of the most accurate rifles I've built. It's also the only long range gun I have that still has it's factory trigger.
I think the Savage actions are a cheap way to go for DIYers but as soon as you start to pay anybody to do anything other than put a decent barrel on it, you should at least consider where you want the gun to end up. Starting a little further down the road with a custom action might be a better long game. If you shoot prone, the Savage Elite Precision is another option for a starter gun that you wouldn't need to change or add much too. The things that make the magnums reasonable to shoot are weight, aggressive muzzle brakes, and decent ergonomics.
I've been building on Magnum RPRs lately.
That Surgeon XL in the dedicated AI chassis is still my dream gun, but I doubt I'll ever build it.
Oscar keeps a list of all the guns that have scored Shooter Points on the URSA website. There is a complete breakdown of cartridges, bullets, actions, and barrels. It's worth noting that there might be easier ways to do things now than were available in the past. The Receiver Matrix is a separate document that lists key features and dimensions for every aftermarket action I've ever heard of.Comment

Room for a long loaded big magnum round to fit. I know the Savages are smaller than the big boy custom actions a lot of people use for elr. I dont really have a dog in the fight of repearter or single it doesnt matter to me. I just want to build something that will work at 2k and I know mag length can get in the way. I have also built some obscure rifles that wont eject a loaded round without pulling the bolt and I dont really care for it.Room for what?

What do you consider "things that actually matter?"Comment

With the copper and brass solid bullets most actions won't allow you to eject a loaded round due to the port length being much shorter than the over all length of the round. On a 338 4+ inches is common.
The rear action screw size doesn't care if it's a single shot or a repeater.
Repeaters have a magazine cutout and Jerry Stiller from Stiller actions did a stiffness comparison of the various actions on Benchrest Central about 20 years ago.
When you hang a long heavy barrel on a action with a magazine cutout you have less bedding surface and when that long barrel whips around under recoil it has less bedding surface and the action will get lose in that bedding sooner than it will on a stiffer single shot action.
My rifle in the picture above uses a Stiller Tac408 repeater action and a 24 pound barrel 36 inches long.
Conventional bedding wouldn't last very long so I went with a barrel block and took all of that stress off of the bedding.
30 inch barrels 1.250 straight cylinder can be hung off of a Remington 700.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

One of the fundamentals of ELR shooting is managing the time a round is in the chamber, particularly as the string goes on. This makes it a lot less likely you'll chamber a round you won't actually shoot. With Savages, pulling the bolt involves pulling the trigger, which has always made me uncomfortable.Room for a long loaded big magnum round to fit. The Savages are smaller than some of the custom actions.
The 300 Norma will give similar performance to the 338 LI and fit into a CIP magazine. Loaded rounds will eject from a 338 Lapua action. The first 338 RPR I bought was never fired with the factory barrel. It became a 32" 300 Norma. There used to be a pretty big BC trade off between 30 and 338 that the 30 had to cover with speed, but the ATips have narrowed that gap and the speed advantage is still there.
My take on it is scores are determined by the weakest link, not the strongest.
The more successful shooters practice and test at ELR distances. They have also learned what really good ammo is and how to make it happen.
After an appropriate barrel, I think you get more reward from the optics than the gun.Comment

We are holding a match on Father's Day June 20th and you are cordially invited to shoot one of my 338's.
We may even bend Shaun's arm enough to get him up the mountain as well. Last time he showed up he brought heavy fog and drizzle with him.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.
