New Henry, new problems (?) + break in

I have a new Henry in 45-70 (the newer model with the gate). This is my first lever action rifle. I have read some of the lever action threads here (and on other sites); but I have not found this exact malfunction issue.

When I load the tube via the gate (with snap caps); frequently the first round fails to properly load when I work the lever to chamber the first round. Sometimes it won't get pushed out of the tube at all; other times it will move from the tube to the carrier but then the whole thing will be jammed until I poke the round/move it with my finger. The rifle proceeds to seemingly eject/load fine after that. I have tried this a few times with live rounds; it seemed to jam less but it still jammed now and again. It will also do this same malfunction if I load one round or if I load all four.

If I load via the tube; I have (yet) to experience this malfunction. So this seems to maybe have something to do wither either a) my loading process via the gate (a friend suggested operator error when loading; I admit that this is quite possible) or b) maybe a malfunction with the gate/something related?
I plan to take the rifle apart when I have time to see how things look inside; nothing appears out of the ordinary at this time from what I can tell.

I have also worked the action a little bit to try and start smoothing things out. The lever seems a bit smoother now but still more rough than I was expecting from the Henry. How much "break in" improvement should I expect from the rifle and what, if anything, special should I do to help it along? Just work the lever a million times? Is my feeding issue perhaps simply a matter of breaking in the rifle?

As a side note; anything accessory wise I should consider? So far I am considering: switching the sights out for something a bit more visible (this will be a hunting rifle), will add a sling, maybe a carrier for extra rounds, and I guess maybe wrap the lever itself in leather.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Clean and lube (even though it's a new rifle), including the magazine tube, spring, etc. Working the action with snap caps is always a good idea. Perhaps, with the snap caps being so much lighter in weight, it affects the loading? Perhaps giving the butt a tap on the ground after you load may help the snap caps settle in.
Henry's customer service is supposed to be very god. Give them a call.

Try it with live ammo, but maybe somewhere where you can legally discharge any firearm. At least point the muzzle somewhere an AD will do the least damage (the obvious just stated for those reading who may be new to shooting).

Sometimes snap caps are not weighted correctly or their nose profiles or overall length differ from common loads, affecting feeding.

If you're in western Los Angeles, I can have a masked look at the rifle for you.

Thanks for the info; I’ll definitely take the rifle apart to wipe down/re-lube/inspect if I can this weekend. I’ll also try more testing with the snap caps and live rounds.

Thanks for the offer 200, unfortunately I’m not nearby though otherwise I would take you up on your offer! I will post any further results here; and if the issue persists I’ll call Henry next week.

skinner sights are great! you can also check out ranger point precisions website, they got a bunch of stuff for the henry. since my eyes suck, i ended installing a rail on top of my henry and using a red dot. I also decided to defile it and install a midwest industries tac rail on it too. lol but its my baby and shoots like a dream.

Pay particular attention to the follower plug and tube spring. I had a similar issue with a Marlin 39A, and the area around the plug where the lifter interfaces it had crud in it. Could be that loading from the top, the ammo has enough energy to push past it, but not so when loaded from the gate.

Had a spare minute so I decided to give Henry a call. First off, very nice customer service rep answered my questions right quick. And the answer to my snap cap issue was that the snap caps are the issue. The rep states that the gun will likely not load them properly. I’ll (safely) mess around with some live rounds and confirm I do not get the same malfunction.

Second, thanks again for everyone’s advice and for the places to look for accessories. Can’t wait to get shooting in a few weeks!

That's typical unloading sequence for a lot of lever rifles. And a number of shotguns.

The one time I ever interacted with Henry customer service, I was thoroughly impressed. They take care of their customer base.

Never ever yet had a problem cycling live ammo thru a lever, bolt or working the slide on a semi auto. But, have it however you please. Only issue I ever had was a Rem Nylon 66 that did NOT dump all of the rnds in the rear loading tube before I cleaned it. ONE Rem Yellow Jacket ( truncated cone ) rnd stayed under the bolt. Never ever use truncated rnds in a Nylon 66 ! They don't feed right and etc. Never used any since, like since 1981. Naysayers have at it.
