    300 yard egg challenge

I'm not posting this for commentary of the guy's performance, especially because he cheated a little, but because he uses high-tech equipment to make his videos. Including his gadget that allows video of the scope image.

His scope here is a 5-25x Strike Eagle, which has gotten some good reviews. What I'd like to know is how it compares to the typical $1000 scope. I've never tried to look at targets that small at 300 yards, and the only scope I have mounted anyway only goes up to 6x. That Strike Eagle runs about $700 and has gotten good reviews "for the price". Basically I'm wondering how much more I need to spend to get a noticeable improvement in glass.

I think you can find PST Gen 2's for close to that price.

I personally couldn't buy an expensive scope online without looking through one first at a LGS or gun show.
You can see 300 yds with 12x. I've used 24x for 1000 yds.

Most of my scopes were made by Vortex, although a few of them have a Cabelas labels stuck on. They don't always focus as well as I'd like them to but I also wear progressive bifocals and I'm not sure how much effect that has.

Not that this is a definitive reference point but I was shooting at a 14" place at 400 yards over the weekend with a 7x Diamondback scope on a .243 and had no trouble seeing the plate clearly (hitting it was a different story). I could make out individual impact marks on the 300 yard plate. Diamondbacks are one step up from Vortex's bottom-of-the-line Crossfire series.

I agree with alpha romeo that you really need to look through the scope to determine for yourself how it and your eye see things at distance. I'm trying to hit a deer/elk/antelope/coyote at 200-300 yards so what I need more than target definition is a rugged scope that wont fall apart on me. I don't need to see the hairs on their chin.

        YMMV

Sheesh, this guy makes it seem like it’s hard - I play this easy game all the time - except I use ostrich eggs at the 50 yard line

I have a Vortex Strike Eagle, but I have the 3-18 version. They're definitely not as nice as the vipers or razers. One thing I have noticed is that when I crank it all the way up to 18x I get some noticeable redshift especially on dark areas. It's fine at lower magnifications but at max you can see like a very thin outline of red blurriness. Kind of like when you look through through those cheap paper 3d glasses they would give you as a kid. It is noticeable but not that bad. Take it with a grain of salt though because I have astigmatism and red dot sights sometimes don't look right to me either so it could just be my eyes.

Back to the guy's video though, I love the Tacticam through-scope system I think those are so cool I really wanted to get one for myself but I thought it was just a little too pricey. It's probably reasonable for someone with a little more budget than me

I wonder if you could do something similar (but cheaper) with one of the fiber optic borecam type cameras. Hmmm.

Yes, I wish more video content producers had one. It sure would be nice to see a variety of scopes.

This video also pushes the limits a bit. Looking at the mounted critters 50 yards away at the other end of the store doesn't tell you as much as looking at eggs at 300 yards.

When I shopped binoculars, I took them outside the store (accompanied by a salesperson) and focused on objects that were much further away than anything in the store. Like an antenna that was probably two miles away.

I'm not sure how much a camera shot will tell you, especially if it's a digital camera, because the sensor typically gathers a lot more information than you see in a typical photo of video. Even just a little bit of digital zoom can bring out details that might not be apparent in a normal video.

I've killed lots of ground squirrels way beyond 300 yards using only a $500 Leupold 6.5x20.

Anyone else notice. His target is setup on a road ?
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

You can look up the various Fly Shoots and Egg Shoots to see the equipment lists but if your only going to shoot eggs at 300 yards a fixed 24X or Fixed 36X Weaver at $450 would be the cheapest way to go.
If the gun isn't dedicated to 300 yard eggs the variables will run more but a sightron will fit your needs and budget.

I was watching some youtube videos from "Johnny's Reloading Bench", he compared a Vortex Diamondback, to a Strike Eagle, to a 1st gen PST.

Granted he took some iffy pictures through some sort of cell phone scope mounting gadget but there was little noticeable difference between the Diamondback and the Strike Eagle, but quite the difference with the PST.

That is to say, it seems to me (from watching that one video) that the Diamondback and Strike Eagle likely use the same glass and coating which is inferior to their other more high end scopes. So the extra money paid for a Strike Eagle is in other features than optics.

Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

It makes sense too. The Strike Eagle has a ton of features. It has to have compromises somewhere to make up the difference, and it would make sense to use Diamondback glass.

I got an email ad for surplus ACOGs this afternoon. I tried to buy one about an hour after the email was sent - all gone!

I can see the white 1" tall X in the center of the 1,000 yard F class target with my Nightforce at 22X.
