Lever Love?

The main reason I shoot a lever gun is for the caliber.
I shoot the 45-70 Government and there are very little in the way of firearm actions that are currently manufactured that will chamber the 45-70 in a strong action for hotter loads and have quick follow up shots at the ready.
Examples of modern lever actions for the 45-70 Government:
Sharps Rifles, = Lever gun. (Yes, it is a falling black, but also a lever action)
Ruger number 1 = Lever gun (Same as above).
Marlin 1895 = Lever gun
As far as why people like them ... It could be nostalgia (westerns) or the first center fire rifle we graduated to from a rimfire, or we learned to shoot using a lever action, or it was a family heirloom, it could be that they are politically correct (for the moment) and not as threatening in appearance as an AR/AK (black rifle, but just as effective), etc.
Lever guns, are just another way of chambering a round into the barrel. If you are happy with a bolt action, pump action, semiauto, etc. you are not missing out on anything. Use what you like. If you didn't like your buddies 38-40, then that's okay. You don't have to like lever actions. But congratulations on trying the lever action and asking the question.

While some of you were too busy watching corny old television westerns, our ever popular Gun
Magazine writers de-emphasized lever gun stories.
So the younger game animals never 'Got-The-Word' so to speak and didn't know they were supposed
to die immediately after getting plastered with a obsolete 30-30 Winchester.

When you are 8 years old everything is new.
T.V. Westerns went bad when they went to color, eliminated singing cowboys and their guitars, and started
riding nameless horses that never did any tricks. However, we at Hambam Media have decided to make exceptions
for Rawhide, Bonanza, High Chaparral and Kung Fu starring David Grasshopper Carradine.Last edited by hambam105; 08-07-2020, 3:50 PM.Comment

Have Gun, Will Travel and the first 12 years of GUNSMOKE are hands down the best television westerns of that period for my tastes.
I never really watched GUNSMOKE as a kid in the 1960s... it was always Bonanza or something. Great show in it's own right. Watched a lot! of The Rifleman.
So I'm catching up on the friendly sarcasm between Matt, Chester, Kitty n Doc now. Then along came that Haggins boy.
Matt Dillon's character was very well-written.

Say what?
My Savage 99 can reload while shouldered and firing. And... It has a handy counter on the side of the receiver to to tell you how many rounds are in the rotary magazine.
Side gates are so 1894. And outdated by 1899

And yes, lever guns are a ton of fun to shoot

This is why. For a lot of us, our first 'real' rifle was a lever action; we bought it without too much thought because this is what Americans buy. And after just one season of TV westerns, who didn't want a Colt .45?Freedom is the dream you dream while putting thought in chains.

I was eight or nine when I got my first BB gun, a Daisy Red Ryder lever action. In the late fifties nothing else would do.

Anybody else notice on The Big Valley that they used a lot of Marlin 336s?
I am an unashamed Marlin fanatic.Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.
