How does Remington cut the 700's bolt raceway now?

    Wire EDM?

I presume that it used to be broached before, maybe still is.

The 700 police 308 has had different versions.
There was a 12 twist. Then a 11.25 5R twist. And now I see the current version 10 twist 5R
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

        Forget the remington.

        Go with a Savage 10PC.

Why? What is so special about the Savage 10 PC?

You have to educate me man, as I had been away from the bolt action rifle scene for quite sometime. I've been to 1911s, 22 LR pistols, and shotguns (both manual and semi auto).

One of the reasons I was enamored of the old Remington 700P was the HS precision stock. I was with a gunsmith many moons ago, he had a 700p disassembled for upgrading. I remember, that rifle was quite heavy compared to my then Ruger M77 stainless in 30-06 caliber. My Ruger had the laminate stock.

He pointed out to me that the HS precision stock is a " high quality and rigid " stock and according to him, that is what I want for precision. That was around 1993-1994. I am sure things had evolved after those many years. I hadn't been able to keep up.

Back then, Savage didn't have much serious following, no one seems to even glance at a Howa, there is no such thing as a " Bergara " brand of rifle, and no such thing as 6.5 Creedmoor round. It was Winchester and Remington for the serious enthusiast. It was like Ford vs Chevy, Impala SS vs Mercury Marauder, etc. etc.

He was asking why the 700P fell out of favor. The cartridge is a big part of the reason. It comes only in .308 and .223.

Or you can look at one of these in 6.5 creedmoor. For a few hundred more.
Stock is more adjustable. And comes with a detachable mag.
                  It comes in 308 also.

It absolutely is still a good and functional choice. There are plenty of reasons for choosing to go or stay with 308. it didn't suddenly stop "working" simply because the US finally discovered the 6.5.

I'd recommend saving a few more pennies and getting a 700 5R, Sendero, or 40x for a little more. I think the latter you'd have to find used as a new one isn't available to my knowledge that isn't an ungodly price. Used they're pretty reasonable though.

                        About $1900 for it vs 1k for a 700p

I don't really know anything about 5r, but the police model comes with a very nice HS Precision stock.

No, it still comes with the crappy X-Mark trigger. It has a really nice 5R stainless barrel though that takes to 168gr Sierra Match King bullets REALLY well. Factory 1/2moa with 168gr FGMM SMK rounds. I couldn't believe it. They are rumored to be the M24 precision rifle blanks that didn't make the cut for one reason or another, but I'm not 100% on this.

Factory threaded barrel on the newer models as well, and has the HS Precision Varmint stock with green webbing. It's a great rifle all around.

                              Same thing for the LTR.
