Remington 700P?

I am getting interested in a decently accurate and affordable bolt action rifle for range use, particularly the Remington 700 Police. I don't hunt nor interested in hunting.

Back around the mid 1990s the Remington 700P seems popular especially one chambered in .308 and articles about it seems everywhere. Nowadays it seems nobody is interested. Did this rifle fell out of favor??

Needless to say, I had been out of touch for quite sometime regarding the latest fad in the bolt action rifle scene. If the 700P is no longer in vogue, what other models should I consider?

Only interested at this time on the Remington brand, no offense to fans of other brands.

I've got a Rem 700 P LTR in .308 that I'm pretty happy with. I did change out the stock to a Magpul Hunter. .308 is a great round, but it's not so much in vogue now because everyone wants a 6.5 creedmoor. It's got let recoil and flatter trajectory than the .308. I've shot mine out to 900 yards but at that range I was at a serious disadvantage to the creedmoors with longer barrels, but I'm usually only shooting between 300-600 yards which is fine for .308. If you're not regularly shooting past 600 and you don't mind the recoil .308 is a lot easier to source.

Keep and eye out for a reasonably priced one in the marketplace. They come up every now and again.

You mean them getting rid of the old manual machines and going full CNC in the mid 2000's?
The current receivers and barrels are definitely better than the ones from the 90's.

I have a gen 1 Remington 700 mil-spec 5r. I love it. It has different rifling and a better stock than the police.

There is also a lot more competition in this space now. Howa and Begara both have rifles in the same price range and even a bit less that are equally as capable and in some instances even better.

700’s are still popular. People just like to talk **** and spread what they read on the internet. I don’t see a reason to get a police model over a 5r, but that’s just me.

.308 fell out of favor. In making holes in paper, 6.5 Creedmoor does everything better than .308.

I don't really know anything about 5r, but the police model comes with a very nice HS Precision stock.

You want the newer version of the rem 700 police.
It has a 1-10 twist 5r barrel.

Do not listen to "I heard..." crap. Talk to Randall, he has seen and worked on more 700s than anyone else you will speak to one on one.

Current build 700s are straighter and in every way except finish superior to any 700s ever made, due to the modern CNC capabilities.

The 5R versions, at least as of two years ago, were the best off the shelf model for accuracy due to the barrel.

Confirm with Randall, but that's what I did and I can hit anything I would even think about shooting at.

Re other brands, if you can name any accessory or aftermarket part for a precision rifle, that part will be made to fit a 700. It is the small block chevy of bolt rifles. EVERYONE makes parts for them.

Perhaps it does. But the .308 Win still remains a good, functional round.

Thanks, Randall. Kinda figured that'd be the case. I myself have been keeping an eye out for a 700P, having heard good things about them. Just checked the link above that someone provided for the rifle; apparently it is indeed a 1:10 twist rate.

Someone said why get a police when you can get a 5r. My police version came with a 5r barrel.

I presume that it used to be broached before, maybe still is.
