    Sub $500 bolt gun

Getting the itch to buy a new gun, but not sure what to get. Want to stick with 223/556 as I can reload those. Looking at the rem 783, savage axis 2, Ruger American or any other option. Will be used for plinking out to 300yds when I don't want to shoot an ar. Getting paralysis by analysis. Thoughts and options would be appreciated

I have a Howa 1500 with a varmint barrel that I'm very pleased with. I bought it used, with a scope, for just over $500 before sales tax and DROS.

I remember reading some posts here about the Thompson/Compass rifles. They seemed to shoot well but reviewers didn't care for the factory stock.

I have three rifles with bull barrels (.223, .22lr and .17HMR) and all of them shoot well. The only drawback is they're heavy.

Savage has rifle/scope packages with the Axis for way under $400. It's not a great scope but good enough for the range at 300 yards. Other manufacturers have similar packages.

The Remington 783 has a hardwood stock which is better than the Ruger's stock.
It has a 1:9 twist barrel which is good up to 77gr bullets which will do everything the 223 should be doing at 300yds and closer.

Ruger Predator is better if you wanted to shoot 600+ yds and need to stabilize the longest match bullets with it's 1:8 twist barrel but it's flexy-flyer stock is not as good:

None of the 223 chambered Axis II in the price range of the other two rifles you mentioned have a heavy barrel.
The AXIS rifles offer hunters and shooters even better out-of-the-box performance at the same affordable price with natural ergonomics in many configurations.

Howa/Weatherby Vanguard are made by Howa in Japan and the quality and accuracy is on par or better than any same price gun, IMHO. The newer series 2 triggers as well are better (never liked the look or clutter of the little chromed accutriger chingas...haha even though it is good) I own a Howa Varmint in .223 and it will shoot Hornady Vmax 50 or 40 grainers through one ragged hole at 100 yds. I own a Weatherby Vanguard in .243 with same accuracy with 55 grain NBT.

I picked up the Mossberg MVP Varmint 5.56 NATO a few years. I talked the LGS down on the price of the display gun that had a few scratches and it was a slow time for gun sales so $400.
It takes AR mags and is 5.56 NATO chamber. The 24" barrel is free floated and fluted so weight is still under 8 lbs. I shoot 1 moa with hand loads no problem.
There is a forum for these where some after market parts are available to upgrade a few things but I'm good as is.

I like watching the used racks at the LGS. Look for one of the various Varmint type models.

Get the Ruger American with ar mags.
                      Reload 69g for it.
Then at Xmas time treat yourself to a Boyds stock. They have versions now for the Ruger that use ar mags.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Howa mini action is currently on sale at KYGUNCO for $400 a really awesome price (edit: and in your desired caliber)

I have a Howa Mini action chambered for 6.5 Grendel and I absolutely love it. This one one sale has a cheaper stock so you might want to upgrade it. The one I got was substantially more than $400 but it came in a nice aluminum chassis with LUTH-AR adjustable stock. I am sure the chassis adds a little bit of accuracy compared to the base model with synthetic stock but I am confident you'll be impressed with how accurate this is out of the box. You can upgrade stock later if you wish but for $400 bucks you will NOT *NEED* to change anything. It will shoot excellent out of the box. The mini action is really cute too, it's very lightweight and easy to manipulate everything.

Only thing I have to complain about the howa mini is the magazines. they're plastic, kinda flimsy, and Howa is the only manufacturer making them. Wish somebody would do an aftermarket improvement, but as is the mags are just OK.

Yeah, magazines are the Howa's biggest weakness.

There's also the low-priced Savage standby, the 12FV if you're near a Cabela's. It has a stout heavy barrel, an exceptional trigger for the price, and a stock that's better than most of the bargain basement brands. It has a blind magazine, which is not a big deal for just range shooting. Normal price is $420, and although it's normally on sale a lot, these aren't normal times.
