I should add here that I think the curved-stock-and-lever Marlin 336s with the 22" barrels and abbreviated magazines some of the most beautiful mass-produced rifles ever conceived. They truly are wonderful to behold, and all the way down to how the shape of the curved lever flows with the stock.

    Just look at that!

This one, in the Gunbroker auction, doesn't look quite right, that's all.

You say "hardened". I'm no metal fabricator, but I'd image that almost anything can be persuaded from it's original shape with enough heat.

Well I should have qualified my position indicating that my only experience with changing anything on a Marlin lever is limited to my work on my 39A. My two other Marlin levers (336 and 1936) have had no need for any metal work so I have no idea whether they are hardened or not.

With the lever on the 39A it would be impossible to reshape it without annealing it first. That is certainly possible but one would have to know exactly what they are doing first (metal alloy, degree of hardness with a Rockwell hardness spec, etc.). I am not a gunsmith but I am a Mechanical Engineer so I have some knowledge in this area (but by no means an expert). It would then have to be re-hardened in order to maintain the original strength and durability.

I should mention that the trigger was just as hard.

When I went to break the edges it reminded me of trying to break the edge on a ball bearing race. Grinders were required.

        Copy that.

Did you look at that photo I just posted? Isn't that beautiful?!

But, seriously... you know, it could just be the low-resolution depiction posted on Gunbroker's auction page... either way, I split hairs, and therefore I ask you to excuse me.

Meanwhile, I am pondering the ballistics of .35 Remington. It just seems to be such a great mid-range caliber. Big bullet, neat rifle, too. But I have my new (to me, 1968-made) Marlin Texan in .30-30 and a stunning '95GS in .45-70... I could get done what I need to get done w/ those two. I have a .308 if I need the reach of a spitzer projectile.

Perhaps a .35 Remington 336 Marauder (16.5" barrel) might cross my path one day and there'll be something in my wallet with which to SNATCH it up.

I absolutely agree, one of the most beautiful rifles ever created. I bought my 336CS back in 1994 and the quality is exquisite, especially the stock with cut checkering and excellent mating to the metal. My Dad's old 1936 was pretty basic in nature, nothing fancy just a rugged workhorse. It has great patina and a lot of fantastic memories of great hunting trips into the Sierras. My Dad was not one to file notches to record bucks taken with it but there would be plenty if he had. My first deer rifle when I got old enough to get a hunting license.

The price is a lot higher then I thought it would be.

I do like this one, IIRC 2005 wasn't a good year for Marlin

Holy Toledo! Ohio... I figgered it was going to get to maybe 2000... outta my league. But $3200+?! Yeah, no. It is! a gorgeous rifle.

It's nice, but IMO it isn't that nice.
However, if someois willing to pay that $$, then the seller & buyer should be happy.

Wow, $3200. Mine was only a 30-30, but I guess that's why my SD sold in a day for $600. Oh well, I still doubled my money.
But 35 Rem, yeah, I like it. We even have 35 Remington get togethers with shooters from around the country, and the last one in Texas had a guy from Chile and a guy from South Africa. The South African uses a Marlin for a lot of medium game down there.
I have two Marlins and a Remington 81. I actually prefer Sierra bullets to hunt with.

                    That's crazy high...
It makes the new ones look better and better. I do prefer the walnut that they're using on the new guns plus the MSRP is $693.67

How ever, there is this one

I wonder if Marlin is doing that finish in-house, or is it a Doug Turnbull work of art?
Surprised to see the mention of Micro Groove rifling; I didn't know they were still using that.

I heartily concur! I have always wanted one in .35 Rem.

My brother has an original .444 with the 24 inch barrel, short magazine and straight grip Monte Carlo stock. I really liked that one, too.

It should be decent...Remington didn't buy out Marlin until the end of 2007. Even then, they were still producing the guns in the old factory, but Remington implemented new manufacturing processes that took away a worker's ability to see a gun through assembly from start to finish, which took effect for the 2008 and 2009 production runs, and then of course after 2009 they moved the production to Remington's Ilion factory and started producing worse quality at a higher price. I've heard they've improved recently, but why bother when there are plenty of used original Marlins to be found?

OK, Somebody cut a fat hog on that deal.

I posted a comment yesterday about knowing what you are looking at before you dive off the deep end? I wonder if anyone read it? This guy obviously didn't!

$3225 is Marlin Custom Shop Money! and that gun ain't no Custom Shop Gun! It is an Older Refinish, with maybe replacement wood.

Here's a pic of my Ithaca M37 with wood that I bought in 1976 for $85! It was made in 1940 and was reblued at Ithaca a couple of years ago, the wood was cut down to an English style Strait Grip at the same time. The gun sat in my safe for 40 years before I did anything to it. I paid $100 for the gun $85 for the Fajen Wood. $500 to have a friend reshape it and checker it, an $500 for Ithaca to refurbish, re-blue the gun and all the choke tubes. $1200 total.

Would I sell this gun for $3200? probably.

That Marlin is nice looking but after about $800 it is getting kind of ridiculous for a 1955 gun that has been refinished and didn't have any collector value in the first place.

Oh well, It wasn't my money.

I don't know what year [it] is...

Serial begins with "25" which, when subtracted from 100, leaves us with 75, as in 1975 manufacture. Lever pivot screw looks well-used, meaning it's bore has probably been cleaned much which means it's been shot a lot. Imho, the .35 Rem chambering notwithstanding, this is a barely-$600 rifle if that.
