That is my quandary. The top one is beautifully figured, but the straight grain of the bottom one more closely matches the forestock.depends on the grain on the forestock as to the best match and the objective of the finished product..
another consideration is the grain flow as it relates to your plans for the stock and intended use of the gun..
obviously the more figured grain will be more attractive aesthetically but can be more challenging to tool if that's in your plans..
but if recreating a vintage factory style working gun, the straight grain may be more accurate and more durable..
good luck and please share your finished work
I like the top one better on its own, but the bottom one more closely matches the existing.Leave a comment:

Ah, first you must prove yourself worthy. LOL can you identify what gun they fit?Last edited by bigbossman; 11-18-2021, 5:13 PM.Leave a comment:

The top one, for sure! That grain is real nice.
I would keep the bottom one for another project, or as a 'just in case'.

I was talking about what I would do, not you. You'd be surprised at some of the **** I have done ...
You have a good plan there. Do you mind if I ask where you got them?Leave a comment:

I would start with the bottom one, after I screwed that one up I'd have s better chance with the top one, which I like more.Leave a comment:

Two votes for the top. Hmm.....
I haven't talked to Ivan in a couple of years, but I'll see if I can find his contact info and find out for you. He's in Livermore, so if you're close by and he'll do it, you can go visit. He's a fascinating fellow.Leave a comment:

Top for sure.
Any chance that machinist is willing to make another sizing die for a reasonable price?Leave a comment:
