    I'd really prefer a .357 lever action

    But came across this.

What do you lever guys think? Not sure I want to add another caliber and I don't reload metallic cartridges.

Id hold out for a .357 because it can also shoot cheap 38s. An older Marlin 1894 would be nice too.

If you don't reload, probably pass. 44 mags tend to be pricey. 357/38 spl will certainly be more economical and fun.[in my opinion]. Nice rifle tho.

I say you get that one if you can, try and bring down the price as much as you can, and then you could list it here in the marketplace looking just to trade for a 357 / 38 version of the same type of rifle.

That way you get the fun of shooting it for only the price of a box of 2 of ammo, plus any DROS fees.
Heck, it might even come with some ammo.

Then you'll have people showing you their goods from their lever action collection.

        In other words,
        Get both.

If it was near me, I'd have a real hard time not buying it.

If it's just a "fun gun" wait for the .357. If you think you might ever hunt with it go for the .44. Marlins are scopeable whereas top ejectors aren't.
Bottom line is get what you really want. If that means passing on a "deal" but it's not what you're really looking for you probably won't feel too bad. Especially after you find a nice .357.

I had a 16" Rossi is 44 mag. It wasn't fun to shoot and 44sp was just as much if not more than magnum ammo. Like others have said, if you don't reload, its expensive to shoot.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

You could shoot 44spl; that would be fun. 44mag, and then rifle cartridges are not so much fun to plink with in the 1894 levers. The light, straight stock carbine will pound your shoulder...

44spl and 44mag are more expensive than 38spl and 357. Reloading is pretty cheap though.

Thanks everyone for helping me out.
I'm really looking for a fun gun and wouldn't hunt with it.
Since it doesn't appear to be a great deal and the fact that it's 300 miles north of me (probably additional $ to ship), I'll wait for the .357.

If anyone else is interested it's listed online as a consignment gun at the Salinas Turners.

I'm not a fan of Turners, but once in a while they have something interesting.

I paid that for a used one a few years back when they were harder to find. No regrets.

Is the marlin marked jm? If it is id snatch it up pronto.
Jm marked 1894s are getting hard to find in 44 or 357.
