Beginner Hunter Caliber Question

The gun pictured in my post is about 3 years old and the only negative I can think of would be that the bolts knob will rust..

Maybe rub some stove black on it so it'll look pretty again.

One thing no one has mentioned, if you do enjoy hunting this won't be your last gun.

And don't buy the pretty boy expensive gun for hunting. Hunting is hard on guns rust, dents, scratches and so on are the norm.

The 700’s aren’t *****ed about online as much as the 770,783, and 870. Outside of the trigger issues and recalls, the rifle seems fine albeit overpriced. The 870 has a notoriously **** finish on it.

I’m rather surprised you guys aren’t aware of all of this. It’s all over the internet and other forums. I’ve been reading about this stuff for years.

That’s good that you guys have had success though. I’m not going to push that matter any further. I’ve handled and shot Remington’s and never had any malfunctions outside of an 870 that had pins falling out often. I’ve also seen very poor finishes, rust, and felt some terribly rough actions on their cheap model bolt guns. I just wouldn’t give that company my money. My Uncles 783 is about as smooth as a mosin nagant.

I probably can’t shoot the inside of a barn though so I don’t know what I’m talking about.

OP you’ll be just fine with a Remington 700. There may be a few complaints on line but they are good guns. It’s mostly people who don’t own one that parrot the few that have bad experiences. I’d bet dollars to doughuthat every singe product ever made has a bad review...no matter how good it is.

If you're interested in the Rem 700 but don't want to "take chances" with Remlin's QC there's Bergara. Very nice rifles that take Rem style scope rings. Available in .243

Mine is another vote for the 30-06. I started hunting with 30-06 and then, depending on what I was hunting, used 223, 243, 257 Roberts, 270, 30-06, 7mm,45-70, 375, 6.5 Grendel, etc. They are all good rounds but if I had one hunting rifle it would be 30-06 and many times I wish I had just stuck with that all the way through. And while I killed my first few hogs with a 257, since OP mentions hog hunting, which I do a lot, I would not recommend the 243 or similar rounds because the close to perfect shot placement needed for such rounds is often luck on a large hog on the move, which often how you find them.

I will shoot it for 20 years and not worry about it.
Same with the paint job on my Chevy truck that fell off.
Same with the jumbo jack's with tainted meat.
Same with my Chinese toothpaste and dog food.
Same with my lettuce with salmonella.
And yesterday I ran with scissors.

My Ruger M77 Mkii has been my deer rifle for 8 years and I got it used. Never any rust or problems but I do take care of it because I depend on it every year. I don’t really see a point to neglecting it and bragging about it on the internet.
